The race was overshadowed by a protest from the Finnish team. She accused the bronze medalist Mamlejew of running after Daniel Hubmann, who started four minutes after Mamlejew and had overtaken him during the race. The protest was finally dismissed with 2 to 3 votes.

The leading Swede Martin Johansson was seriously injured on the last lap. Then the runners-up Thierry Gueorgiou (France) and Michal Smola (Czech Republic) stayed with him while the Norwegian Anders Nordberg ran straight to the finish line to get help. The Swiss final runner Matthias Merz was on a different route and therefore only found out about the incident after crossing the finish line. The jury later decided to score the race anyway.
