Orienteering World Championships 1981

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 9th World Orienteering Championships were held from 4. September bis 6. September 1981 in the area around Thun in Switzerland instead.

After two world championships had taken place in two consecutive years in 1978 and 1979, the staging cycle was set at two years again. This should now be enforced by 2004.

In the men's area, Norway's runners were once again in a class of their own. Four out of four possible medals went to the Norwegian men. In the individual run, as in 1979, the first three places were occupied by runners from Norway, with Øyvin Thon defending his 1979 world championship title with a two-and-a-half-minute lead over Tore Sagvolden .

Sweden became the most successful nation among women: Annichen Kringstad , 1980 Junior World Champion, won the first two of her six world championship gold medals of her career in singles and in the relay. Kringstad was awarded the Svenska Dagbladet gold medal in 1981 because of her success in Thun . There was an innovation in the women's relay race: instead of the previous World Championships, four instead of three runners started in one team.
