Arja Hannus

Arja Hannus (born January 30, 1960 in Ånge ) is a former Swedish orienteer and ski orienteer . She became world champion in both sports.

career

Hannus became Swedish champion in night orienteering in 1976 and collected three other national championship titles around 1980. In 1981 she took part in the World Championships in Thun , Switzerland , and became the relay world champion with Barbro Lönnkvist, Karin Rabe and Annichen Kringstad. At the beginning of 1982 she competed at the World Ski Orienteering Championships in Aigen im Ennstal . She won gold in the singles in front of the Finns Mirja Puhakka and Sirpa Kukkonen as well as in the relay with Ulla Klingström and Susanne Lindgren . She also won four silver and two bronze medals at the next four world championships. Successes were also achieved at orienteering world championships without skis, which she skipped twice after 1981. In 1987 in Gérardmer , France , she won the women's individual competition and was runner-up in the relay. In 1989 and 1991 she won the world title with the relay. Her career also reached a new high in the ski orienteering in the early 1990s. In 1992 in France she became world champion on the short distance and with the relay as the final runner with Ann-Charlotte Carlsson and Annika Zell . She then ended her career as a top athlete, but returned to the 1998 World Championships, finishing fourth in both individual competitions and second in the relay. At her last ski orienteering world championships in 2000 in Krasnoyarsk , Russia , Hannus was already 40 years old. On the long distance she relegated the Finn Liisa Anttila to second place and won her fifth world championship title in orienteering.

Arja Hannus ran during her career for the clubs Kovlands IF , IFK Södertälje and Domnarvets GoIF . With Södertälje she won the Venla in 1991 . In the same year she also won the O-ring .
