Sinikka Kukkonen

Sinikka Maire Kukkonen (born August 1, 1947 in Tervo ) is a former Finnish orienteer and ski orienteer .

Career

Sinikka Kukkonen started in orienteering at five summer world championships in the 1970s. She had her best result in the 1976 individual run in Aviemore, Scotland, with 7th place. With the Finnish season she won the title in 1972 in Czechoslovakia together with Pirjo Seppä and Liisa Veijalainen . In 1976 she was second in the season. At Finnish championships, Kukkonen won a total of six titles, including the three titles in the short, long and night runs in 1972.

In ski orienteering, she won the title at the first world championship, which was held in Hyvinkää , Finland in 1975 . She also became world champion in the relay with Raili Sallinen and Aila Flöjt . At the following three world championships in ski orienteering she won two more gold medals and one silver in the relay. In 1977 she finished third in the Bulgarian Velingrad behind the Swedes Marianne Bogestedt and Sonja Johannesson . At the World Championships in 1980 and 1982 she was third in the individual run. In Finland she won the national title continuously between 1972 and 1977, again in 1980. With the relay - she ran during her career for the clubs Pielaveden Sampo , Juvan Urheilijat and Lahden Suunnistajat -37 - she won the Finnish championship five times.

The orienteering ski runner Sirpa Kukkonen is Sinikka Kukkonen's younger sister.
