Liisa Veijalainen

Liisa Kaarina Veijalainen (born Liukkonen ; born April 4, 1951 in Piikkiö ) is a former Finnish orienteer .

Liisa Veijalainen was 19 years old when she first competed in world championships. In the individual she did not get more than 40th place, in the relay she was also used and reached fourth place in the team with Sinikka Kukkonen and Pirjo Seppä . At the next World Championships in Czechoslovakia in 1972 , she managed to advance to the top of the world. In the individual she was sixth, with the relay - the same as in 1970 - she won the gold medal in front of the Swedes and Czechoslovakians. In 1974 she was able to repeat her sixth place in Silkeborg , Denmark . At the Nordic Championships in 1975 she won silver behind Mona Nørgaard from Denmark. She celebrated her first world championship victory in 1976 in Aviemore . In front of the Swedes Kristin Cullman and Anna Lundmark , Veijalainen took the victory on the 8.9 kilometer route. In the season with Outi Borgenström and Sinikka Kukkonen she was a silver medalist. The following two world championships took place in two consecutive years due to the change in the international competition calendar. In 1978 in Kongsberg and 1979 in Tampere , Finland , Veijalainen was runner-up in the singles and world championships with the relay. In Tampere, she only just had to admit defeat to her compatriot Outi Borgenström, in the season she won with Leena Silvennoinen and Leena Salmenkylä . Her road to success continued in 1980 when she won the Nordic Championship ahead of Outi Borgenström.

Veijalainen married her then coach Seppo Veijalainen in the 1970s . During her career she started for the clubs Piikkiön Karhu , Liedon Parma and MS Parma .
