Piikkiö
Piikkiö [ ˈpiːkːiœ ] ( Swedish Pikis ) is a former municipality in southwest Finland . At the beginning of 2009 it was incorporated into the neighboring town of Kaarina .
Piikkiö located on the coast of the landscape Finland Proper 16 km east of Turku . The municipality of Piikkiö had an area of 90.83 km² and most recently 7,578 inhabitants. The community was monolingual in Finnish .
History and location
The first written mention of Piikkiö comes from the year 1331. At that time there was probably a wooden church at the place, which was replaced in 1755 by a stone church. The ruins of Kuusisto Castle were used as building material .
There are several manors on the north bank of the Piikkiönlahti Bay. Because of the mild climate on the Baltic coast, which is protected by the offshore archipelago , there are many orchards in Piikkiö. The population of the municipality grew constantly due to the proximity to the city of Turku, in 2005 the population growth was 2.8%.

The place had a train station on the Helsinki – Turku railway from 1889 to 1979 .
economy
Piikkio Works Oy , a subsidiary of Meyer Turku Werft , operates a cabin factory for cruise ships in town.
