The Piikkiö station is the station of the Finnish town Piikkiö ( Swedish Pikis ).

history

The station went into operation with the opening of the VR railway line from Turku to Helsinki in 1899.

The station building was designed by the Finnish architect Bruno Granholm , built in 1888 and expanded in 1922. It is a listed building and has been privately owned since 2017 after an auction.

The last passenger train stopped on May 25, 1979. The station was used for freight traffic for another ten years.

In 1992 the station was temporarily converted into a switchable block and bypass point, which has been vacant since May 28, 1995 after the remote control was installed. The station building has been unused since then. After being used as a residential building and at times as a kindergarten and magazine store, the electricity was switched off in 2012 and the windows were nailed up with sheet metal.

Station park

Station master Robert Kokkola founded the Piikkiö station park in 1909. It was laid out in the English style and contained new types of plants and shrubs. The station park is in its original form, various types of wood and ornamental shrubs from the early days of the park have been preserved. According to the planting plans drawn up by VR in 1959, nine different tree species were planted. The station park was later reduced in size and now ends at the eastern end of the station building. Due to the reduction in rail operations, the maintenance of the station park was reduced. In the 1970s, the treatment and cutting of hedges and ornamental sharks ceased.
