Many of Granholm's wooden station buildings built in the early 1900s are still in use today and are in good condition.

During his studies he did internships , including with the renowned architect Theodor Höijer (1843–1910), and later with Theodor Decker and Frans Anatolius Sjöström . In addition, he took a railway technology course, an indication of his interests in this direction. He worked in an architecture office until 1892 and was then employed as a draftsman by the Finnish State Railways . Within a year he was promoted to "chief architect" and in 1895 he was head of the building department. In addition to his work for the railway, Granholm also designed several other buildings such as villas and apartment buildings .

Granholm's style is strongly influenced by the romantic epoch, as it corresponded to contemporary tastes. The buildings are considered to be particularly valuable and detailed with carvings and other decorative elements that clearly distinguish them from other, similar buildings.

Granholm was born with Maria Charlotta Granholm. Fagerlund married, who gave birth to the daughter Freydis Maria (1885–1969).
