World orienteering championships 1979
The 8th World Orienteering Championships were held from 2. September bis 4. September 1979 in the area around Tampere in Finland instead.
The world championship was awarded to Finland as part of the 8th IOF Congress in 1975 in Bosön in Lidingö , Sweden. Finland hosted the World Championships for the second time since 1966. The hosts dominated the women's competitions, while Norway had a triple triumph in the men's individual race. In the season, however, the Norwegians were only sixth. Sweden won ahead of Finland and Czechoslovakia.
