Sarolta Monspart

Sarolta Monspart (born November 17, 1944 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian marathon and orienteer .

Monspart became the first non-Scandinavian world champion in orienteering in 1972. In Staré Splavy , Czechoslovakia , she won ahead of the Finn Pirjo Seppä and the Swede Brigitta Larsson . Two years earlier she had won the silver medal with the Hungarian relay, in which Magda Horvath and Ágnes Hegedűs ran alongside her . At the 1976 World Cup in Aviemore, Scotland, she was third in a season with Iren Rostas and Magdolna Kovacs . She also won the multi-stage O-ring competition in Sweden . In 1978 she ended her career in the Hungarian national team after 16 years after a tick bite caused encephalitis .

At national championships in Hungary Monspart won 14 championship titles in orienteering and six titles in cross-country skiing. She was also a pioneer of orienteering skiing in Hungary.

Monspart was also the first European woman to run a marathon under three hours. She won the Budapest Marathon on October 29, 1972 in 2: 59: 53.2 hours. In 1976 and 1977 she repeated her victories with times of 2: 48: 22.2 h and 2:48:59 h. With her time set up in 1972, she was the fourth fastest woman in the annual ranking behind the Americans Cheryl Flanagan , Teri Anderson and Nina Kuscsik .

In 1967 she completed her studies in Budapest and then initially worked as a primary school teacher. In the 1980s she was team leader of the national orienteering federation and from 1997 to 1999 she was vice president of the world federation IOF .
