Thierry "Tero" Gueorgiou (born March 30, 1979 in Saint-Étienne ) is a French orienteer . With eleven world championship titles won so far, he is one of the most successful orienteers of all time.

career

In 1997 he started at the world championships for the first time at the age of 18. He finished 50th in the middle distance race and was twelfth with the French relay. In 2002 he succeeded for the first time in a World Cup race (in the Norwegian Røros in the sprint) with a second place on the podium. From then on, his career took a steep upward turn: in 2003 Thierry Gueorgiou won his first world championship gold medal in Rapperswil . It began its years of dominance in the middle distance.

At the 2005 World Championships in Aichi , Japan , Gueorgiou became world champion over the middle distance for the third time in a row and thus achieved something that no male orienteer had achieved before him, comparable only to the successes of the exceptional athletes Simone Niggli and Annichen Kringstad . Gueorgiou was also able to win at the World Games 2005 in Duisburg.

In 2006 the world championship winning streak over the middle distance ended. In Aarhus , Denmark , he missed the podium with fourth place. In the other competitions he could not win a medal either. Nevertheless, he was the first overall World Cup winner in 2006 , after which, among other things, he was able to win all three World Cup races in the French Auvergne over the three different distances.

In 2007 he became double world champion in Kiev after winning the sprint and middle distance races. In the victory over the 6.2 km long course, he relegated the Finn Tero Föhr to second place by a good two minutes. In 2008 he won both the world and the European championship over the middle distance. In 2009 he was involved in the accident of the Swede Martin Johansson . Johansson seriously injured his thigh during the relay race. The Norwegian Anders Nordberg , the Czech Michal Smola and Gueorgiou interrupted the race to help together. While Nordberg ran to the goal to get help, Gueorgiou and Smola treated Johansson's wound with the shirt that Gueorgiou was wearing. Then they took Johansson to a street where he was taken care of by a doctor whom Nordberg had brought in. Gueorgiou won his sixth world championship title in the middle distance in 2009, but remained without a win at major championships in 2010. At the European Championships in Primorsko he was only eleventh, at the World Championships in Trondheim he won bronze over the middle and long distance. In doing so, he screwed his world championship record to seven gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

He achieved a remarkable triple at the 2011 World Championships in the French department of Savoie , when he clearly won the medium and long distance and also won the relay title for the first time with Philippe Adamski and François Gonon . He finished the 2011 World Cup season in second behind Daniel Hubmann from Switzerland. 2013 in Vuokatti Gueorgiou was world champion in the long distance and behind the Russian Leonid Novikow vice world champion in the middle distance.

Gueorgiou has already won twenty French championship titles. Nationally he runs for the club NO Saint-Étienne , internationally he competes for the Finnish club Kalevan Rasti . With this elite club he won the Jukola in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2013 and 2014 , one of the largest relay competitions in the world, which takes place in Finland in June . As a member of Kalevan Rasti, he is also eligible to compete in Finnish championships , where he has already won several titles.
