Petter Thoresen (born March 10, 1966 ) is a former Norwegian orienteer and five-time world champion.

In 1989 he was world championship debutant in the long distance and with the relay (in a team with Øyvin Thon , Rolf Vestre and Håvard Tveite ). After, however, rather bad for him World Championships in 1991 , he caused a sensation at the Nordic Championships in Rena in 1992 . Thoresen won both individual competitions ahead of the Dane Allan Mogensen and won a third gold in the relay as the final runner with Bjørnar Valstad , Håvard Tveite and Anders Bjørnsgaard . At the Nordic Championships the following year, he won silver in all three of these competitions. In 1993 he also won his third gold medal at world championships. On the short distance, which was included in the 1991 world championship program, he won ahead of Timo Karppinen from Finland , and he finished third in the long distance competition. The following year he secured the overall World Cup. In 1997 he became world champion on the long distance for the second time after 1989, and with the relay he was third. He finally won his fifth world championship gold in 1999 in Inverness, Scotland, with the relay ( Tore Sandvik , Bernt Bjørnsgaard and Bjørnar Valstad).

Thoresen was a member of the Norwegian top orienteering club Halden SK , with which he won the Jukola relay in Finland in 1993, 1997, 1998 and 2003 . He had already won this competition in 1988 with his previous club Bækkelagets SK . With Halden he also won six times at the Tiomila in Sweden.
