Timo Karppinen

Timo Karppinen (born December 26, 1967 ) is a former Finnish orienteer . Between 1993 and 1997 he won four silver and one bronze medal at world championships .

After he had won his first Finnish championship in 1988 and had run to fifth place in the Nordic championships, which he brought back two years later, he did not contest his first world championships until 1993 in West Point, USA . There he won the silver medal behind the Norwegian Petter Thoresen in the short distance race over 4.8 kilometers as the crow flies. As the final runner of the Finnish relay, he also won the bronze medal with Keijo Parkkinen , Mika Kuisma and Petri Forsman . At the following two World Championships in 1995 and 1997 , the Finnish team with Karppinen won the silver medal in the relay. In 1997 Karppinen again won silver in the short distance race. When his compatriot Janne Salmi won in Grimstad , Norway , Karppinen was twelve seconds behind the gold medal.

In the 1996 World Cup he came third in the overall ranking behind the Swedes Johan Ivarsson and Jörgen Mårtensson .

Karppinen ran during his career for the clubs Lahden Työvänen Hiihtäjät (until 1992), Oulun Tarmo (1993 to 1996) and SK Pohjantähti (from 1997).
