Janne Salmi

Janne Juhani Salmi (born April 17, 1969 in Turku ) is a former Finnish orienteer . In 1997 he became world champion over the short distance.

At the 1995 World Championships in Detmold , Salmi was runner-up in the long distance behind the Swede Jörgen Mårtensson . In the relay he also won the silver medal as the final runner together with Keijo Parkkinen , Reijo Mattinen and Timo Karppinen . At the three following world championships he won a total of five other medals, including gold in 1997 over the short distance course at that time (now the middle distance). He left his compatriot Timo Karppinen twelve seconds behind in Grimstad, Norway . In the long distance Salmi was sixth, with the relay (together with Timo Karppinen, Juha Peltola and Mikael Boström ) behind Denmark second. In 1999 he won bronze in Inverness on the short distance behind the Norwegian winners Jørgen Rostrup and Juha Peltola. In the relay (with Jani Lakanen , Juha Peltola and Mikael Boström) the Finns won silver again, this time behind the Norwegian team. In 2001 he won the gold medal with the relay in Tampere, Finland . In a team with Jani Lakanen, Jarkko Huovila and Juha Peltola, the Finns relegated Norway and the Czech Republic to second and third place. In 2003 Salmi started for the last time in the world championships and came ninth in the middle distance race.

For the Turun Suunnistajat orienteering club in Turku , he regularly competed in the Jukola relay race. He won three times at a jukola. In addition to his Turku hometown club, he also belonged to the clubs Bækkelagets SK (1990) and OL Bowlare (1989 to 1995).

Salmi is married to the Swiss orienteer Vroni König .
