Sandvik won the gold medal with Bernt Bjørnsgaard , Petter Thoresen and Bjørnar Valstad in his first World Championship appearance in Scotland in 1999 in the Norwegian relay . A year later, at the first European orienteering championships in 36 years, Sandvik in Truskavets, Ukraine, came third on the short distance of 3.3 kilometers, behind Russian Valentin Novikov and Ukrainian Yuri Omelchenko . In the World Cup, Sandvik finished second in the overall standings, five points behind Jani Lakanen from Finland .
In 2001, the orienteering race was held for the first time at the World Games and Sandvik won the silver medal behind Australian Grant Bluett in the only individual race over the medium distance . With Bjørnar Valstad, Hanne Staff and Birgitte Husebye , he also won the gold medal in the mixed relay. At the World Championships in Tampere in the same year , Sandvik was again second in the middle distance, this time behind the Finn Pasi Ikonen . With Bernt Bjørnsgaard, Carl Henrik Bjørseth and Bjørnar Valstad, he won another silver medal with the relay. In the following years there were no international medal successes. In 2005 he was still Nordic champion with the Norwegian relay.
At club level, Sandvik has been running for the Norwegian top club Halden SK since 1998 . With him he won the Jukola relay in Finland in 1998, 2000 (as the final runner) and 2003 . He had already won this competition in 1995 with the NTHI team. The tiomila won Sandvik with Halden in the years 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. Sandvik also launched for the clubs OL PAN and Indre Østfold OK . At Norwegian championships he won 21 medals, including eight gold medals.
