Petteri Johannes Koponen (born April 13, 1988 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish basketball player. The 1.94 m tall point guard has been under contract with the German club FC Bayern Munich since 2018 .

Career

Koponen played for Espoon Honka in the Finnish Korisliiga from 2004 to 2008 . There he was already a regular in the 2006/07 season, followed by his first appearance in the senior national team of Finland in August 2006 . In 2007 Koponen, who had become Finnish champions with Honka, was selected as the first Finn in the 1st round of an NBA draft , but the Philadelphia 76ers gave the rights to him to the Portland Trail Blazers . Since the Trail Blazers didn't offer him a contract, Koponen stayed in Finland for another year to do his military service and play for Honka at the same time. Again he won the Finnish championship and was also awarded as the MVP of the season's main round, making him the second youngest recipient of this award (after Teemu Rannikko 1999).

In August 2008 Koponen moved to the Italian Serie A for Virtus Bologna . He played for Bologna for four years, during which time the draft rights to Koponen were transferred to the Dallas Mavericks in a three-way swap with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Denver Nuggets in June 2011 .

After the Finnish national team had qualified for a European Championship finals for the first time in 16 years, Koponen took part in the 2011 European Championship finals in the summer of 2011 , where the selection immediately reached the round of the twelve best teams. Two years later, the team was able to repeat this success and once again place itself among the ten best selection teams in Europe. At that time Koponen was already playing for the Russian club BK Chimki, to which he moved in 2012. At the 2014 World Cup in Spain, Koponen was eliminated with the Finnish team in the preliminary round, but was at least the best passer of the tournament with 5.8 assists per game. He won the Eurocup with BK Chimki in 2014/15 , and was also elected to the All-Eurocup First Team . In the summer of 2016, Koponen moved to FC Barcelona . Shortly afterwards he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident , from which he recovered relatively quickly. In his two years at FC Barcelona, the Finn played 69 games in the ACB league and averaged 8.6 points per game. He hit 92 three-point throws for "Barca" with a success rate of 43 percent.

In July 2018, Bundesliga club FC Bayern Munich announced the signing of Koponen. With Bayern he won the German championship in the 2018/19 season. The Finn contributed an average of 9.0 points to this success in 40 Bundesliga games.
