Korisliiga ( German  basketball league) is the top division in men's basketball club in Finland . The league also had sponsor names in the past ; it was also known as the Sparliiga. After the first Finnish championship in 1939, a round-robin tournament between eight teams to determine the champion was held the following year, which can be described as the birth of the Finnish league. The league currently consists of twelve teams that determine the Finnish champions and whose best teams qualify for European club competitions. The record champion is Pantterit from Helsinki with 14 titles, 2012 champions were the Nilan bisons from Loimaa for the first time . In the past, among other things, it caused a stir that two former NBA All-Stars and NBA champions, Dennis Rodman in 2005 and Scottie Pippen in 2008, played individual games in the Korisliiga in Torpan Pojat's jersey .

The teams will play a double round in the round-robin tournament ( English Round Robin ), so that when current number of twelve teams, each club 44 games in the regular season has completed. The championship title will then be played out between the eight best-placed teams in play-offs . As of 2012, the play-off series will be played in the " Best of Five " mode across all rounds.

International competitions

Finnish teams have not yet won a title in European club competitions. In the European Cup of National Champions , in which only the respective national champion was qualified in addition to the defending champion, the respective Finnish champion reached the second round of the top twelve teams relatively regularly in the 1980s, but was never able to qualify for the final round of the best six teams.

The Finnish league is not a member of the ULEB , which is why Finnish teams have not participated in the major club competitions at European level since 2001. Finnish teams have only competed in FIBA Europe competitions in the recent past . Due to the tight Finnish schedule, teams only took part occasionally, so before 2012 Lappeenrannan NMKY was the only one represented and immediately reached the semi-finals in the FIBA EuroCup Challenge 2006. After this competition was discontinued a year later, the club took part in the FIBA EuroCup 2007/08 , in which the main round of the 16 best teams was reached. Only in 2012 did two Finnish teams take part in what is now called the EuroChallenge . While Tampereen Pyrintö was eliminated in the preliminary round of the EuroChallenge 2012/13 , Kataja Basket Club immediately reached the quarter-final play-offs, in which they lost to BCM Gravelines .
