The Albanian Basketball League is the top division in Albanian basketball. It was founded in 1946 and is organized by the Federata Shqiptare e Basketbollit . The Albanian Basketball League consists of six teams. The record champion is BC Partizani Tirana , who have been national champions 33 times.

Historical background

The Albanian Basketball League is one of the oldest basketball championships in the entire Balkan region . It was first played in 1946. About two years later, the sport gained great popularity in Albania with the rise of the Communist Party of Labor , which resulted in almost every city in Albania establishing its own basketball club.

After the fall of communism in 1991, almost every club was forced to disband as the sport was no longer financially supported, and basketball was more and more forgotten in Albania. However, some dissolved associations were re-established in 1993, not least thanks to private investors and state subsidies.

The Albanian championship is played among six teams. Each team plays against each other four times in two home and two away games, so that each team plays a total of 20 games during the regular season. The first four teams play in a play-off for the championship, while the fifth-placed team must compete in the relegation against the runner-up in the First Division , the second Albanian league. The team placed last will be relegated directly to the First Division. A team receives two points for a win and one point for a defeat.
