Radio Televizioni Shqiptar (RTSH) is the public broadcaster in Albania . It was founded in 1938 as Radio Tirana and is based in Tirana .

RTSH operates several television programs , national radio stations and local programs. Radio Tirana International is the international radio service.

history

The Albanian-speaking channel was founded in 1938 with Italian support. A television program was first broadcast in 1960.

In communist Albania the program was tightly controlled. For a long time it was also the only station that could be received in Albania in the national language. The propaganda character lasted for almost 50 years.

Even after the end of the communist regime, the government continued to interfere in the program. The main focus of the station was on music and culture, news was still tendentious .

RTSH is now a public broadcasting company that has to compete with numerous private broadcasters. The program has also been broadcast via satellite since 1993 .

The Radio Tirana archive, founded in 1938, is one of the oldest radio archives in Europe with sound samples from 8,000 shellac records and 15,000 tapes. It is about to dissolve itself.

The national television broadcaster TVSH has been broadcasting its programs since 1960. With the collapse of the communist regime in Albania in 1990/91, private broadcasters were founded that are far more successful than TVSH today. The station is accused of tendentious reporting, especially in the news.

In addition, national festivals and concerts are broadcast, some of which are also produced by RTSH itself:

Cooperations

RTSH has been a member of the European Broadcasting Union since 1999 , which organizes numerous projects within Europe . One of the most famous is the Eurovision Song Contest , in which Albania has been participating since 2004. The Albanian preliminary decision for this singing competition is made at the annual Festivali i Këngës (see: Albania at the Eurovision Song Contest ).
