Michael Schwarz (born April 25, 1967 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a former German basketball player and coach.

career

Schwarz began his basketball career at TB Emmendingen, then played at USC Freiburg . There he advanced to a youth national team. After spending a year in the USA at Griffith High School in 1984, Schwarz moved in 1986 from USC Freiburg to MTV Gießen in the basketball league . Before that, in April 1985 he took part in the Albert Schweitzer tournament in Mannheim with the German national junior team. In August 1986 he played for the German selection with Henning Harnisch and Henrik Rödl at the European Junior Championships in Gmunden / Vöcklabruck ( Austria ). In the summer of 1987 he was part of the German squad for the Junior World Championship in Bormio, Italy . In both tournaments, the German selection reached fourth place. Since then, to this day, 2017, this has been the best placement of a German selection at the Junior World Championships.

In the further course of his playing career, the two-meter-tall center and winger was in the service of the then Bundesliga club TK Hannover . In 1997 he rose to the Bundesliga with his home club USC Freiburg, where he played until 1999. Then he was still employed in the second division at ASC Theresianum Mainz .

As early as the 1980s, Schwarz was active as a coach in addition to his playing activities in the youth division of USC Freiburg, later also during his time in Mainz. In October 2003, the graduate economist became a full-time national coach for the U18, A2 and U20 national teams and remained in office until August 2005. In 2004 he was in charge of the German U18 team at the Albert Schweitzer tournament and thus took part in this tournament as a player and coach. In 2005, Schwarz trained alongside Chris Fleming in the German U20 team at the European Championships in Chekhov (Russia), and in the same year he was head coach for the German A2 team at the Summer Universiade in Izmir ( Turkey ).

From December 2005, Schwarz started working for the European Basketball Federation (FIBA Europa) : initially as a coordinator in the field of coach training, then as head of the coach training department and from January 2015 as head of the department for training and further education for European basketball coaches. During his full-time work in the association, Schwarz was also head coach for München Basket (2006 to 2009) in the 2nd Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga ProB , and in the 2009/10 season he coached the FC Bayern Munich team in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA .

In 2019, Schwarz was elected deputy chairman of the MTV Munich from 1879 . In the club he works as a basketball coach.
