The gymnastics sports department was one of eight subsidiary departments of the main and soccer club FC Bayern Munich and had existed since 1974. It promoted competitive sports with the aim of promoting top-class sports in the Olympic discipline of artistic gymnastics . Bernhard Simmelbauer took part in the Olympic Games in 1984 (together with Wolfgang Wagner) and in 1988 and in the World Championships in Montreal in 1985.

In 2003 the team took 3rd place in the 1st Bundesliga group B. After the team held the class in the single-track 1st Bundesliga until 2007 (2004: 6th, 2005 6th, 2006: 5th, 2007: 6th) She rose in 2008 with eighth place in the table in the 2nd Bundesliga South. With the win of the second division championship in 2009, the team returned to the first class and finished in 6th place in the table. The current Bundesliga squad belongs u. a. national team member Brian Gladow . After relegation to the second division in 2012, she was promoted back to the first division in 2013.

Shortly thereafter, the department was dissolved in January 2014.
