He then decided to attend Georgetown University and played for their basketball team, the Hoyas . The left-hander played an outstanding freshman season there and was voted rookie of the year for the Big East rookie . However, the missed Hoyas the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship finals. In the 2010 NBA draft he was selected seventh by the Detroit Pistons , and on July 7, 2010 he signed his first NBA contract. On January 30, 2011, he set a career high with 17 rebounds and five days later reached another personal high of 20 points . He finished his rookie season with 9.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and was called up to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team .

In his sophomore year, Monroe improved greatly, scoring 15.4 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. And the following season his statistics remained consistently good with 16.0 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists. Nevertheless, Monroe missed the jump into the play-offs with the Pistons . In the 2013/14 season , his statistics remained constant, but the Pistons failed again at the playoffs. In the summer of 2014 Monroe became a restricted free agent and was able to negotiate a new contract, but the Pistons had the last word. Due to a lack of offers, he received a contract with the Pistons in the amount of the previous year's salary ( qualifying offer) , which meant that he was without a contract in the summer of 2015 and was able to search for a new team without any obligation to the Pistons.

After another unsuccessful year in Detroit, where he averaged 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds, he moved to the Milwaukee Bucks in the summer of 2015 . With the Bucks, Monroe signed a three-year contract worth $ 50 million. At the beginning of the 2017/18 season , Monroe was transferred from the Bucks to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Eric Bledsoe . There, however, his contract was terminated after a few months, in February 2019 he signed a contract with the Boston Celtics for the rest of the season. He left the Celtics at the end of the season and signed a new contract with the Canada-based Toronto Raptors .

Due to the injury of Jonas Valančiūnas in December 2018, Monroe received more minutes and mostly came off the bench. The Toronto Raptors swap , in which Valančiūnas, CJ Miles , Delon Wright and a draft second-round selection right for Marc Gasol were swapped shortly before the transfer deadline, Monroe was transferred to the Brooklyn Nets in order to have financial leeway within the salary cap. to accomplish. But there he did not become part of the team, because the Nets decided to fire Monroe and pay off.
