The SAP Garden is a multi-purpose hall under construction in the Bavarian capital of Munich . It should be usable from the second half of 2022 and offer space for up to 11,500 visitors. The ice hockey club EHC Munich ( DEL ) and the basketball team of FC Bayern Munich ( BBL ) are to play their home games in the hall.
geography
The SAP Garden will be built on the site of the Olympic cycling stadium in Munich's Olympic Park , which was demolished in 2015 .
history
planning
In August 2017, Red Bull Stadion München GmbH launched an architectural competition with international participation in coordination with the City of Munich. In November 2018, the jury selected two winners from eight designs. The client, Red Bull Stadion München GmbH , commissioned the Danish architecture firm 3XN from Copenhagen, in collaboration with the landscape architects from Latz + Partner, with the construction, which is expected to cost around 100 million euros. The Red Bull GmbH will bear the entire cost of construction. There will be an underground car park with 220 parking spaces under the multi-purpose hall. In addition, there are around 4,000 places in the park harp of the Olympic Park. In addition to the main hall, there will be three covered ice rinks for training purposes, young and popular sports and public ice skating. To this end, the state capital signed an extensive Ice Age contract with the client as a second tenant alongside FC Bayern. The facade shows a vertical lamellar structure . The entrance area is glazed . The roof is to be greened .
The groundbreaking ceremony was originally planned for summer 2019. This did not take place until December of that year. The reason for the delay are problems with contaminated groundwater on the planned construction site. Munich's sports mayor Christine Strobl is currently assuming an opening date in 2022. The Red Bull group speaks of the "second half of 2022" after the application for the building permit for the SAP Gardens was recently submitted. This began the approval process for the project. The start of construction is now planned for the beginning of 2020. In addition to the delays, the construction costs are said to have increased from 100 million to 150 million euros.
construction
The first excavation work on the site began on January 13, 2020 . Furthermore, the construction of the provisional construction roads with sidewalks and a pedestrian crossing started, which made accompanying tree felling work necessary. A partial building permit was available for this.
Naming
The name sponsor is the German software manufacturer SAP . Since the multifunctional hall in Mannheim already bears the name SAP Arena , this was self-contained from the start. From March 4, 2019, it was possible to submit name suggestions in a competition via the Internet. On March 20, 2019, the final name of the venue was announced. The hall will be named SAP Garden . It is based on the famous New York Madison Square Garden , or The Garden for short . The designation Garden prevailed with 45.3 percent of the vote against Park (44.8 percent). The third proposal from the final round was live (9.9 percent). There were a total of 10,700 suggestions from 127 countries.
capacity
The hall will be able to hold up to 11,500 spectators (basketball) or 10,500 spectators (ice hockey), with standing room for up to 2,000. The gross floor area should be 62,500 square meters. Furthermore, the arena is to be equipped with eleven boxes with 156 seats and around 1,000 business seats.
use
The ice hockey club EHC Munich (DEL), which currently plays its home games in the outdated Olympic ice rink , will use the hall together with the FC Bayern Munich basketball team as a permanent tenant (contract for 15 years). The conversion time between an ice hockey and a basketball game should be less than six hours. So two events could be held a day. With full utilization, both teams can play 40 games each in the new venue. To this end, a maximum of 20 other sporting events and 20 sport-related events can be carried out.
