Life

Gregor Aas grew up in his hometown Bamberg, where he also passed the Abitur. From 1978 to 1982 he studied forest sciences at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the ETH Zurich . Between 1984 and 1990 he worked as a research assistant at the chair for forest botany at Munich University, where he wrote his dissertation on the separation and cross-ability of English and sessile oak (Quercus robur L. and Q [uercus] petraea [Matt.] Liebl .) to Dr. forest. received his doctorate . In 1990 he received the Thurn-und-Taxis-Advancement Award for Forest Science for his dissertation .

For the next six years, Gregor Aas worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Forest Protection and Dendrology in the Department of Forest and Wood Research at ETH Zurich . At the ETH followed in 1996 with the research paper Morphological and Ecological Variation of Central European Quercus Species. His habilitation in the field of dendrology also contributed to the understanding of biodiversity . In addition to the oak species, Aas has dealt intensively with willow and whitebeam as well as with the silver fir . He is also researching the question of the extent to which non-native tree species can contribute to the formation of a climate-plastic forest that is better able to cope with the assumed consequences of global warming in Germany .

Gregor Aas has been director of the Ecological and Botanical Garden at the University of Bayreuth since 1996 .

In October 1996 Aas was appointed director of the Ecological and Botanical Garden at the University of Bayreuth. In this function he is also a member of the Bayreuth Center of Ecology and Environmental Research , or BayCEER for short . Aas has also been a private lecturer for botany at the University of Bayreuth and for dendrology at the ETH Zurich since 1998 .

A wider audience is Gregor carrion above all by its GU -Naturführer Trees (1987) and deciduous trees become known (1992). These identification books had multiple editions and were translated into Danish , Norwegian , Dutch , English , Polish , Spanish , French and Slovak .

In addition, Aas publishes regularly in various specialist journals from the fields of forestry, dendrology, botany and horticulture . Numerous contributions by him have appeared in the series Reports from the Bavarian State Institute for Forests and Forestry .
