The Audi Dome (1974-2011 Rudi-Sedlmayer Hall , formerly Olympic Basketball Hall ) is a multi-purpose hall in Munich district Sendling-Westpark . It is located on the grounds of the Siegenburger Strasse district sports facility, between Westpark and Garmischer Strasse , a section of the Mittlerer Ring .

The circular sports hall was originally built for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich to host basketball competitions . The later namesake Rudi Sedlmayer was President of the Bavarian State Sports Association from 1955 to 1973 and was a member of the organizing committee of the Olympic Games in Munich.

The hall has been the home of the basketball department of FC Bayern Munich since 2011 .

Architecture and data

The hall was designed by the architect Georg Flinkerbusch as a round building with an aluminum outer facade, to which a rectangular low-rise building connects on both sides, which seems to penetrate the main building. The circular base of the main building tapers upwards to the self-supporting ceiling construction that lowers towards the center.

  • Base area: 2,516 m²
  • Main building diameter: 56.60 m

The hall offers space for up to 7,200 visitors for sporting events. The building complex includes u. a. a restaurant and a warm-up hall.

Use of the hall

In August and September 1972, the hall was initially intended for the hosting of basketball competitions as part of the games of the XX. Olympiad used. After that, in addition to concerts (e.g. Frank Zappa , Queen , Bruce Springsteen , Kiss ), the hall was used for many years for exhibitions and trade fairs and, above all, boxing events (e.g. Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko ). The hall was also the venue for handball games ( MTSV Schwabing , TSV Milbertshofen ) and was also used for international volleyball games by TSV 1860 Munich .

There were also special, one-off uses of the hall, such as the shooting of the arena scenes for the science fiction film Rollerball . On April 23, 1983, the 28th Eurovision Song Contest took place in the hall . In May 1994, the nuclear law hearing was held in the hall by over 50,000 objectors in the licensing procedure for the Munich II research reactor .

On February 1, 2003, the hall was closed due to ailing fire protection and safety equipment. From December 2007 an event company tried to re-occupy the hall. The future of the hall should also lie in the revival of basketball in Munich. Both München Basket and the basketball department of FC Bayern Munich expressed interest. However, it was not possible to secure the financing of the renovation measures for sporting events in addition to the other events, so that the operating company filed for bankruptcy in January 2009.

From 2010 direct negotiations between FC Bayern Munich and the city of Munich began, which in April 2011 led to the approval of the city council for future use by the FC Bayern Munich basketball team. After the renovation and repair of the hall to be carried out by FC Bayern Munich had been clarified in accordance with current fire protection regulations, the club signed the corresponding rental agreement on May 20th of the same year. In this context, the name was also changed to Audi Dome . The modernized hall was inaugurated on September 29, 2011 with a friendly against Fenerbahçe Ülker . The first Bundesliga game took place a week later on October 8th against the New York Phantoms Braunschweig .

Succession plans

For the future it was planned to build a new multi-purpose arena for ice hockey and basketball in the Olympic Park instead of the old bike stadium . It should be the new venue for the ice hockey team EHC Red Bull Munich ( DEL ) and the basketball team of FC Bayern. Originally, the 10,000-seat hall financed by Red Bull GmbH was supposed to be completed by 2018. Then FC Bayern's lease with the Audi Dome would have expired. According to the information that became known in February 2016, the opening of the new hall had already been postponed from 2018 to 2021.

On February 25, 2016, FC Bayern Munich announced the withdrawal from the indoor project. President Karl Hopfner cited the financial risk for the club and the long-term loyalty due to the concept presented by Red Bull as reasons for this . In addition, overlapping dates by FC Bayern and the EHC would be inevitable, so FC Bayern Munich would have to continue to operate the Audi Dome as an alternative venue. The Audi Dome will remain the home of the FC Bayern Munich basketball team. The association aims to expand and improve it for the future.

In the course of 2017, there were renewed considerations to build a multifunctional hall for basketball and ice hockey in the Olympic Park. In June 2017, an agreement between FC Bayern, the EHC and the Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz was reported. The new hall, the SAP Garden , is to be built from 2019 and can be used from summer 2021.
