Life

Hopfner completed vocational training as an industrial clerk and studied business administration . Before starting his career in football, he held a managerial position at an industrial company. In 1982 he applied as managing director of FC Bayern Munich , was hired in 1983 and worked in this position for several decades. From 2009 to 2012 he was also deputy chairman of the board of FC Bayern München AG . At the end of 2012, Hopfner withdrew from the board of directors of FC Bayern München AG for health reasons. He was elected Vice President of FC Bayern München eV in November 2012 and was a member of the Supervisory Board of FC Bayern München AG.

In August 2010 he was elected to the board of the league association DFL where he stayed until 2016. From 2007 to 2009 Hopfner was a member of the UEFA Administrative Experts Committee. In 2009, as one of the representatives of the European Club Association , he became a member of the UEFA Club Competitions Committee, where he was third-highest in the official ranking between 2011 and 2015 as "First Vice-Chairman".

After Bayern President Uli Hoeneß resigned due to a private tax affair, the Administrative Advisory Board of FC Bayern Munich proposed Hopfner as his successor on March 14, 2014. On May 2, 2014, Karl Hopfner was elected President of FC Bayern Munich with 99.6% of the votes at an extraordinary general meeting. He held this office until November 25, 2016, when his predecessor Uli Hoeneß was re-elected President after serving his prison sentence.

Hopfner is still chairman of the charity organization FC Bayern Hilfe eV, founded in 2005, a function that he took over in 2009 as the successor to the late Willi Gerner.

At the annual general meeting of FC Bayern on November 24, 2017, Hopfner was offered honorary membership of the club. On March 27, 2018 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon , which he received on June 12 of the same year from the hands of the Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann .

Although Hopfner had made a significant contribution to the economic success story of FC Bayern and his work was often cited in specialist publications as a prime example of constant management, his name was relatively unknown to the public. Hopfner was primarily known to television viewers as a long-time stadium neighbor of his prominent board colleagues Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß . The soccer magazine 11 Freunde called Hopfner, Rummenigge and Hoeneß the “Bayern Triumvirate” in 2011 and satirically compared their weekly appearance in the stadium with the Marx Brothers or “three off the peg”.

Private

On December 29, 2015, he married his long-time partner Anne Kröhl.
