Dejan Radonjić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Дејан Радоњић ; born February 2, 1970 in Podgorica , then Titograd , SR Montenegro ) is a Montenegrin basketball coach . As a player, he won the YUBA League championship three times in a row with the KK Budućnost from his hometown , most recently in 2001 in connection with the cup victory as a double . As a coach, he first worked at the dominant Montenegrin club Budućnost, which won all the championships played so far after the independence of Montenegro in 2006. At his first coaching station, Radonjić won the double six times in a row until 2012. At the end of the 2012/13 season, Radonjić switched to the Serbian Cup winner KK Roter Stern Belgrade, with whom he won three Serbian championships and cup wins, as well as the ABA League three times in a row from 2015 to 2017. From April 2018 to January 2020 Radonjić was the coach of FC Bayern Munich .

Career

player

At the beginning of his playing career Radonjić played second class in what was then Yugoslavia at KK Lovćen from Cetinje . In 1991 he moved to the first division club KK Budućnost in his native city, which was given back its previous name Podgorica a year later. After the break-up of Yugoslavia, he played in the 1993/94 season for league rivals KK Profikolor from Banatsko Novo Selo in the Opština Pančevo , who reached the play-offs of the best four teams for the championship before it was dissolved after that season. For the 1995/96 season he returned to KK Lovćen, who after the departure of Croatia , Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina from the Yugoslav association of states now also regularly played first class. After the eleventh and penultimate place in 1996, the club reached eighth place in the league, which was expanded by two teams in 1997, which still qualified for participation in the play-offs for the championship. In the 1997/98 season Radonjić reached with the FMP Železnik from the capital Belgrade after fifth place in the main round of the play-off final series, which was lost after only one win in four games against local rivals KK Red Star.

He then moved back to Montenegro for KK Budućnost, which was now one of the top clubs within "the rest of Yugoslavia" and had missed a better placement in the play-offs after finishing second in the main round. The 1998/99 season was finally played after the NATO air raids without play-offs and so the KK Budućnost reached after 20 wins in 22 games a victory before defending champion Red Star for the first time the national championship of the now Federal Republic of Yugoslavia under coach Miroslav Nikolić . In the 1998/99 Saporta Cup , the team reached the semifinals with, among others, Vlado Šćepanović , Đuro Ostojić and youth center Blagota Sekulić , in which they lost to eventual title winner Benetton Treviso 60:76 in the first leg . The return match and alleged home game was because of the air raids in Greek Thessaloniki recognized, but this did not reach the team as a result of the military conflict in time and consequently eliminated. As national champion, Budućnost was nevertheless qualified for the FIBA Europaliga 1999/2000 , in which they just qualified for the round of 16 play-offs of the best 16 teams. Here they lost in three games to the later title winner Panathinaikos Athens , with the Serbian compatriots Željko Rebrača and coach Željko Obradović , who had been in the service of Treviso last year, again prevented progress. Nationally, Budućnost remained undefeated both in the main round and the play-offs and defended the championship with ease. In the following season 2000/01 this succeeded under the new coach Bogdan Tanjević , who had taken over from Nikolić, but again under stronger resistance from KK Partizan Belgrade , against which you go in the play-off final series over the full distance of five games had to. In the cup competition, which was played again for the first time, Partizan could also defeat in the final and get the double for the first time . Internationally, the decision was made to compete with FIBA Europe and played in the EuroLeague 2000/01 , which was played for the first time , in which the team again played the round of 16 play-offs with players such as Dejan Tomašević , Saša Obradović , Igor Rakočević and young talent Aleksandar Pavlović of the best 16 teams. Here they were defeated by Real Madrid in two games. After the preliminary end of the Kosovo War , an NBA professional had played for the club for the first time with Jerome James , but Budućnost had to accept a bloodletting in the 2001/02 season and lost in addition to NBA returnees James, coach Tanjević and Dejan Tomašević and Saša Obradović went abroad again. In the EuroLeague 2001/02 Budućnost was eliminated after only three wins in 14 games this time already after the preliminary round and in the national championship one remained after the narrowly defended first main round place in the play-off final series without a win against Partizan Belgrade, which is the new one Series champion swung up. Finally, in addition to Rakočević and Sekulić, Radonjić also left the club and moved again to KK Vojvodina in Novi Sad for two years . With his team Radonjić reached the play-offs twice. After eighth place in 2003, they finished fourth in the 2004 championship round, before losing in two games in the play-off semi-final series defending champion Partizan, in which Radonjić's former teammates Šćepanović and Ostojić were active.

Trainer

After retiring as an active player, Radonjić initially worked as a coaching assistant at KK Budućnost before taking over as the coach in charge after the independence of Montenegro in 2006. In the national competitions of Montenegro, the club remained the best in the following years and seldom suffered a defeat, so the club won six championship and cup doubles in a row by 2012. In the supranational ABA league , in which the best teams of the former Yugoslavia were organized as successors to the old YUBA league, they were always represented among the top eight teams, but just barely missed the Final Four tournament for the championship of this league . After the direct comparison in the ABA league in 2009/10 was still to the disadvantage of Budućnost, this helped the club to participate in the final tournament for the first time in the subsequent ABA league 2010/11 . Defending champion Partizan Belgrade defeated the team by four points in the semi-finals 62-58. A year later, the Israeli visiting team Maccabi Tel Aviv stopped KK Budućnost with 82-60 in the semi-finals of the ABA League 2011/12 on their way to title success . Internationally, the team was a regular participant in the EuroCup in those years . At the premiere in the ULEB Cup 2007/08 , they had successfully survived the group phase and in the following knockout round failed immediately against Serbian competitor KK Hemofarm , who was trained by Radonjić's former coach Miroslav Nikolić. In the following competitions they were eliminated in the group phase of the now called Eurocup competition, with the exception of the 2009/10 season when, after missing the Eurocup qualification in the EuroChallenge 2009/10 , they were level with the eventual title winner BG Göttingen for the round of 16 of the top 16 teams qualified before they were eliminated. In the 2011/12 Eurocup , the team, in which NBA rookie Nikola Vučević was still active at the beginning of the season, not only reached the second group stage behind German representative Alba Berlin , but also qualified for the knockout stage for the first time. Round. In the first and second leg of the quarterfinals, the team lost to the eventual finalists Valencia BC, including Bojan Dubljević and Jermaine Anderson . In addition to his work as a club coach, Radonjić had worked for the Montenegrin Association of Junior National Teams and as a coaching assistant for the men's team before he took it over when an independent state took part in a European Championship finals for the first time . At the European Championship finals 2011 you could defeat the later semi-finalists Macedonia at the beginning after extra time , before you lost the remaining four preliminary round matches and were eliminated prematurely. The following year Radonjić passed on the office of national coach to Luka Pavićević . In February 2013, Radonjić and his club team Budućnost lost an important game against a national competitor for the first time in the final of the cup competition against KK Sutjeska Nikšić and were eliminated a month later after reaching the quarter-finals in the Eurocup 2012/13 very clearly against the eventual title winner Lok Kuban Krasnodar out. After the direct comparison in the ABA league in 2012/13 was again to the disadvantage of Budućnost and after missing the final tournament in fifth place for the first time in two years, it came before the play-offs for the national championship to the premature separation from Radonjić and KK Budućnost.

Instead of the play-offs in Montenegro, Radonjić moved to KK Roter Stern in the Serbian capital Belgrade in mid-April 2013 , where he replaced Vlada Vukoičić as coach. With his new team, Radonjić reached the final game of the ABA League 2012/13, in which arch-rival Partizan Belgrade won back the title, as well as the final series of the Serbian championship, which the club lost again in four games against series champion Partizan. In the following season, Red Star had to admit defeat to series champion Partizan in four games in the final series, but before that Radonjić had successfully defended the club’s title success in the Serbian Cup. As an ABA finalist, Roter Stern played in the EuroLeague 2013/14 for the first time in this now highest-ranking European competition. After three narrow home defeats and four wins in ten games, they only reached the penultimate group place in the preliminary round, which allowed them to continue playing in the 2013/14 Eurocup . After the team had defeated Lietuvos rytas Vilnius and BK Budiwelnyk Kiev in the knockout rounds , they were eliminated in the semifinals despite an eleven-point lead from the first leg against UNICS Kazan , in which Nikos Zisis scored 26 points in the second leg could. In the ABA League 2013/14 you failed as the main round first in the semi-finals at the later title winner KK Cibona Zagreb . After Cibona withdrew for the EuroLeague 2014/15 , Red Star moved up for the highest-ranking European club competition, which was not well received by arch-rivals and Serbian series champion Partizan and accelerated its decline. As the group runner-up in the preliminary round, Red Star was able to qualify relatively confidently for the second round of the 16 best teams in the EuroLeague, in which, however, they were eliminated as penultimate with only four wins in 14 games. After defending the title in the Serbian Cup competition, Red Star won the first play-off semi-final series against Partizan in the 2014/15 ABA League as well as the final series against KK Cedevita and finally the Serbian final series against Partizan, which for the first time since 2001 no longer won the national championship, while Red Star won a triple from ABA league and national double. After Boban Marjanović left the team with the aim of the NBA , Radonjić again played a good role with Axis Stefan Jović as point guard and German national player Maik Zirbes as center in the EuroLeague 2015/16 . After defeating the German runner-up Bayern Munich twice in the preliminary round and thus securing renewed participation in the intermediate round, this time in the round of the best 16 teams after seven wins in 14 games, it was even enough to qualify for the play-off - Quarterfinals. There you had to give in three games to the eventual title winner PBK ZSKA Moscow . After missing the title defense in the Serbian Cup competition, you could defend the title in the ABA League 2015/16 against the new Serbian cup winner Mega Leks and in the Serbian championship against Partizan in the final. This success could be repeated in the following season 2016/17, and the title in the Serbian cup competition was won back. In the EuroLeague 2016/17 a new league format with 30 games was introduced, in which Red Star missed participation in the quarter-final play-offs despite a positive season record with 16 wins due to the poorer direct comparison. After several players had left the club, coach Radonjić was finally unable to agree on a contract extension with the club and left the club in July 2017.

After Radonjić initially couldn't find a new club for the following season 2017/18, he signed a new contract with the German league leaders and cup winners FC Bayern Munich in early April 2018, after the latter surprisingly dismissed the Serbian national coach Aleksandar Đorđević . Radonjić led Bayern to win the German championship in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons. Shortly after the turn of the year 2019/2020, he was released from the Munich team. Although the team was unbeaten in first place in the Bundesliga, the previous season appearances in the EuroLeague (six wins from 17 games) were not enough for the FCB leadership.
