The Košarkaški klub Sutjeska ( Serbian - Cyrillic кошаркарски клуб Сутјеска ; basketball club Sutjeska , literally: gorge ) is a basketball club from Nikšić in Montenegro . The men's team was set up in 1948, but has only recently celebrated its greatest successes by winning the Montenegrin Cup competition in 2013 and participating in the supranational ABA league in 2015/16 .

history

The basketball team of the Sutjeska Nikšić club was established in 1948 when Belgrade coach Vojislav Spasojević brought the sport to the city. After a promising start, when tournaments were won at least in Montenegro, the team separated from the Sutjeska club in 1955 and in 1957 accepted the addition of Partizan . Between 1962 and 1966 they were called KK Mladost and belonged to the strongest teams within SR Montenegro . After 1966 it was again called KK Sutjeska with a short four-year break between 1970 and 1974 as KK Partizan. In the 1990s, the KK IBON was the highest-ranking representative from Nikšić in basketball and was also able to achieve promotion to the top division YUBA league of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in the 1999/2000 season, in which, however, you only stayed one season. In 2009 the KK Ibon was discontinued and the team managed as KK Sutjeska within two years to return to the top division of the now independent Montenegro.

In 2012 Sutjeska had lost both the final series for the championship and the final game in the cup competition against the series champion KK Budućnost from the capital Podgorica . In the 2013 cup final, however, they were able to defeat the dominant Montenegrin team and for the first time since independence in 2006 prevented the national double of the national series winner. This was also the club's first official title win in a national competition. After Budućnost successfully defended his championship title in 2013 against Sutjeska, the capital city team also won the title in the cup competition after a clear final victory over defending champion Sutjeska. In the Balkan League of the 2014/15 season, Sutjeska missed making the knockout rounds of the six best teams in the second group stage . In the final series of the 2015 Montenegrin championship, however, Sutjeska was the first team since 2006 to win at least one game in the final series of the Montenegrin championship against Budućnost. After master Budućnost in the ABA League 2014/15 had achieved the return to the play-offs of the supranational Adriatic Basketball League (ABA League) as second in the main round , the Montenegrin runner-up moved back into the field of participants in the ABA League 2015/16 . For Sutjeska it was the first participation when at the end of the main round they finished 13th and penultimate place with nine wins in 26 games, which was initially not enough for any further participation in this competition.
