Goran Nikolić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Горан Николић ; born July 1, 1976 in Nikšić , Yugoslavia ) is a former Montenegrin basketball player.
Career
Nikolić began his professional basketball career in 1996 with Ibon Nikšić in the Yugoslav second division. In the summer of 1997 he moved to FMP Železnik in the capital Belgrade , for which he was active six seasons until the end of the 2002/03 season. With FMP Železnik he was Yugoslav runner-up in 1998, in 1999 and 2002 he reached the cup final and in 2003 he was a cup winner and made it to the quarter-finals of the ULEB Cup .
In 2001 Nikolić was appointed to the Yugoslav Allstar Game. For the 2003/04 season he moved abroad to the Turkish European division Efes Pilsen from Istanbul . In his first year at Efes, Nikolić was Turkish champion and reached the Turkish Cup final. In the following season he played with Efes Pilsen in the ULEB Euroleague . In the 2004/05 season Nikolic and Efes defended the Turkish championship and reached the quarter-finals of the Euroleague.
In the same year Nikolić was also nominated for the All Star of the Turkish League. This season he scored an average of 9.4 points and 5 rebounds in the Euroleague and 9.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists in the Turkish league. In the following season Nikolić signed with BK Kiev , with whom he advanced into the Final Four of the FIBA EuroCup and was Ukrainian cup finalist and runner-up. On average, he averaged 10.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists in the FIBA EuroCup for Kiev and 10.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1 assist in the national competition. After Nikolić was appointed to the Yugoslav national youth team in 1997, he was a member of the final squad of Serbia and Montenegro at the 2006 World Basketball Championship in Japan , where they were eliminated in the round of 16 against eventual world champions Spain . After the break-away of the Montenegrin basketball association, the Montenegro-born Nikolić decided for the national team of the new association.
In the 2006/07 season Nikolić played for CB Estudiantes from Madrid in Spain . In the FIBA EuroCup, Estudiantes was only eliminated in the semifinals against eventual winners CB Girona , but they could not reach the play-offs in the Spanish league . Nikolic achieved an average of 7.7 points (59% two, 43% three), 5.1 rebounds and 1 assist in the FIBA EuroCup and 8.3 points (62% two, 38% three) and 3.3 rebounds in the ACB league . For the 2007/08 BBL season , Nikolić moved for a one-year commitment to the German first division club Alba Berlin , with whom he won the German championship in 2008. In the same year he followed an offer from Panionios from Athens in the Greek league A1 Ethniki , from where he moved to the Cypriot club Proteas EKA AEL in Limassol during the season . Likewise, his compatriot Goran Jeretin , who was also born in Nikšić and who had previously played for BK Kiew and was also under contract with Alba in the 2007/08 season, moved to this club. Together they reached, for Nikolić again, the Final Four of the meanwhile EuroChallenge instead of FIBA EuroCup, in which they could only come in fourth place. After another season in the Turkish basketball league with the club from Mersin , he ended his playing career in 2010.
