Bruce Johnstone (born January 30, 1937 in Durban ) is a former South African racing driver .

Career

Bruce Johnstone drove touring car races on a Volvo in the late 1950s and switched to monoposti in 1960 . In South Africa he became a well-known racing driver when he finished sixth in the Formula Libre South African Grand Prix . The Belgian Grand Prix driver Paul Frère won the race . In 1961 he reached second place overall behind Syd van der Vyver in the South African Formula Championship . This success brought him a contract for the Yeoman Credit Racing Team of Reg Parnell one. The partnership was not a good star. Johnstone had an accident both at the Natal Grand Prix and during training for the South African Grand Prix .

In 1962 Johnstone came to Europe. Together with Peter Ashdown, he won the 1.5-liter class in a Lotus 23 at the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring . He drove a works BRM at the Gold Cup in Oulton Park and at the end of the year finished ninth in the South African Grand Prix with the BRM P48 .

Although Johnstone was a talented driver, he won the Kyalami 9 Hours with David Piper in a Ferrari 250 GTO in December 1962, and retired in the spring of 1963.
