Eller (noble family)
Eller is the name of an old Rhineland and Westphalian noble family that died out in the 19th century. The original name in medieval documents was mostly von Elner , von Ellner or Latinized de Elnere or von Elnere .
history
From the 12th to the 14th century, the noble von Eller family was one of the most powerful aristocratic families in the area between Cologne and Düsseldorf with extensive property holdings. All available written records from this period concern people who lived in this area. The family branched out as early as the 13th century, as namesake can be identified in both Cologne and Düsseldorf. Towards the end of the 15th century, the headquarters moved to Westphalia.
With Gumpertus de Elnere as subordinate of a court near Hitdorf and his mother Gerdrude , the first mention of this family can be found between 1151 and 1153. The local importance of the de Elnere in the county of Berg in the 13th century can be seen from the fact that they are mentioned as witnesses in some important documents of the Counts of Berg. For example, Adolphum de Elnere is one of the witnesses cited in the agreement of 1247 between Countess Irmengard and her son Adolf on the division of the country estates and castles in the county of Berg.
In 1273 the knights Diederich and Heinrich de Elnere were named as forest counts of the Bilker and Reisholzer districts . In 1276 the knight Diederich was one of the witnesses in the document for the town elevation of Ratingen. In 1288, Ludwig de Elnere followed as a witness in the document for the city elevation of Düsseldorf . At that time they were probably one of the largest landowners in what is now the city of Düsseldorf and were not yet vassals of the Counts of Berg, but of the Counts of "Katzenelnbogen". It was not until 1292 that the nobles of Eller became vassals of the Counts of Berg. According to a document, Count Adolf V. von Berg exchanged “ Henzo von Gerhardstein ” for “ Theodoric de Elnere ” from Count Eberhard I. von Katzenelnbogen at this time . The high position of the "Lords of Ellner" in the Düsseldorf area can be seen, for example, from an agreement between Count Wilhelm I and the knights Theodoric the Elder and Theodoric the Younger von Ellner . In this 1303 agreement, benefices were set for the dean of the collegiate monastery of St. Lambertus Church in Düsseldorf in a ratio of 1/3 from Haus Berg and 2/3 from Haus Eller. In 1320 Arnold von Eller confirmed that the Counts of Berg were your fiefs. It was not until 1424 that Heinrich von Eller declared Eller Castle an open house for the Counts of Berg.
Evidence for the activities of the von Eller family in the area of Cologne is Theodorich von Eller as a seal witness in 1247 in a comparison between the city of Cologne and Count Adolf von Berg, Konrad von Eller in 1431/32 as mayor of Cologne and another Konrad in 1490 as city count from Cologne.
The Knight of the Order Rüdiger von Elner was Order Marshal between 1370 and 1383 , then Grand Commander of the Teutonic Order .
Ernst Heinrich Kneschke named Eller in Hadamar as his parent company, but this is not certain. Its first verifiable seat was Eller Castle in Eller near Düsseldorf . As lord of this castrum Elnere , knight Diederich von Elner is mentioned for the first time in a document dated May 9, 1309. Weakened by frequent inheritance divisions, his descendant Heinrich von Elner had to sell Eller Castle in 1448. After that the family lived in Oefte , Reuschenberg and Laubach . In the Rhineland, a comparison between Wilhelm and Agnes von Eller with the von Quad brothers from 1548 is the last written evidence.
The last male descendant died in 1819. The name is continued by today's Barons von Eller-Eberstein on House Patthorst near Steinhagen (Westphalia) .

1689, on October 23rd, Colonel-Lieutenant Baron von Eller was allowed to build a grinding mill on his inheritance and the meadow near the Plettenburg house and the water flowing through it, which flows into the water below it called the Lennepe so-called Koenenmühle . This family was connected to the von Drisch family on the Dhünnenburg . She had a burial place in the Catholic Church of Wermelskirchen.
