history

Reuschenberg Castle around 1900

The castle dates back to a medieval castle , the exact construction time of which is uncertain. This was first mentioned in a document in 1300. In 1399 it was attacked by Cologne citizens. The complex, located on a 22 meter high hill, was rebuilt as a castle in 1676, but partially burned down in 1885. A year later it shone again in its old splendor.

The system changed hands at least seven times. From 1300 these were the Knights of Reuschenberg. They were followed in 1477 by the von Eller barons , who were replaced by the von Quadt family in 1500. From 1635 the mayor of Cologne, Michael von Cronenberg (Michael Cronenburg), was the owner of the facility. The barons of Diepenthal and Stammheim (from 1660), von Wyhe (from 1730) and von Mylius (from 1767) are also proven as owners. Henriette von Wyhe married Caspar Josef Carl von Mylius from Cologne , who fought for the Austrian army on May 15, 1802 and who lived at Reuschenberg Castle until his death in 1831. The oldest known version of the song of the faithful hussar , which was written down in 1781 and which became naturalized from Reuschenberg Castle in the Cologne area, was found in his estate . Then the castle came into the possession of Baron Franz Egon von Fürstenberg-Stammheim , before the city of Leverkusen became the owner in 1961. She had the building, which had since fallen into disrepair, torn down in 1968 because she did not want to raise the cost of a renovation of the estimated 320,000  DM .
