With 8.5 square meters of exhibition space and an annual budget of 10,000 euros, the Neue Kunstverein Gießen is one of the smallest art associations in Germany. In addition to the art gallery, he is dedicated to promoting contemporary art .

history

The "Oberhessischer Kunstverein" was founded in Gießen as early as 1912, and in 2009 it was renamed "Gießener Kunstverein 1912 eV". Its statutory purpose is to "promote the fine arts as well as the museums and collections in Giessen". The association is based in Biebertal today .

At the same time, the association was founded in November 1998 on the private initiative of Prof. Marcel Baumgartner and Volker Bunte with the aim of promoting contemporary art. Until 2000, the exhibitions of the New Art Association took place in the Liebig Museum . After an interim period, the exhibitions have been organized since the end of 2003 in a pavilion on the corner of Licher Straße and Nahrungsmittelberg. The building was built in 1937 according to plans by Wilhelm Gravert as a toilet and transformer system on the edge of the old cemetery and after the war was first used as a water house and then as a kiosk.

The association has around 200 members. Editions by the exhibiting artists appear regularly for the changing solo and group exhibitions. In addition, the association offers its members joint studio visits and excursions. The art association is a member of the Working Group of German Art Associations (ADKV). From 2006 to 2017 Markus Lepper was chairman and artistic director. In April 2017 Till Korfhage took over the management of the art association, in February 2019 Melchior Tacet.
