Adrian Schiess (born August 3, 1959 in Zurich ) is a Swiss painter and installation artist .

life and work

Adrian Schiess completed an apprenticeship as a graphic designer from 1976 to 1980 and was honored with numerous prizes and grants as a young artist. He works on the intersection of minimal art and monochrome painting .

Schiess's paintings go beyond the design of the picture surface and are transformed into a colored installation by mirroring the surrounding area on the picture surface. The architecture of the exhibition space is part of the work and creates completely different effects on the picture surfaces.

Schiess presents flat, smoothly lacquered, monochrome color surfaces on industrial chipboard, which are presented on the floor or leaned against the wall. Early works were created through a carefully crafted painting process and thus create the impression of industrial production.

Adrian Schiess has been using aluminum panels , sandwich panels with a honeycomb core and hardly any chipboard since the early 1990s . The paint is sprayed on by professionals. Photographic works as bromine oil print or with the inkjet printer were also created. In 1992 Adrian Schiess took part in documenta IX in Kassel.

Adrian Schiess chooses the colors and determines the size of the image carriers. Adrian Schiess designed the color scheme for the Gigon / Guyer sports center in Davos, which opened in 1996 . He lives and works in Zurich and Le Locle.
