Life

Laura J. Padgett was born in Cambridge in 1958. From 1976 to 1980 she studied painting at the Pratt Institute of Art and Design , Brooklyn , New York . In 1981 she moved to Europe. From 1983 to 1985 she studied photography and film with Peter Kubelka and Herbert Schwöbel at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. In 1994 she also completed a master's degree in art history at the Goethe University in Frankfurt . Since 1992 she has been teaching at universities in Germany, the USA and Jordan. She lives and works in Frankfurt am Main .

In her photographic work, Padgett often arranges individual shots into a series of several images that refer to one another and are related to text fragments. Some of the works have references to the classic still life with a strong emphasis on the details of the objects; in other pictures the view of the architectural element of rooms and views predominates. What they have in common is the visualization of structures and layers of contexts of meaning behind the surfaces of the obvious. The whole range of different techniques of the medium is used: classic analog b / w and color photography, digital and computer-processed recordings up to film stills. Since 2018 she has been represented by Galerie-Peter-Sillem in Frankfurt am Main.

Between 2010 and 2012 Padgett accompanied the renovation of the Städel Museum in Frankfurt . The book Raum über Zeit (2012) brings together the photographs taken . A selection of the photographs from the "Raum über Zeit" series can be seen in the DZ Bank art collection. In 2014 she realized a long-term photography project for the “Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography” in Amsterdam. The publication Confined Space was published in 2016, summarizing photographs that were taken over a period of four years during several trips through Lebanon . In 2017 she received the Marielies Hess Art Prize. The associated solo exhibition Somehow Real was on view in the Museum Giersch of the Goethe University. There she showed her found footage film Solitaire, among other things .
