From 1976 he studied with Thomas Bayrle at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main , from 1978 with Hans Haacke at the Cooper Union in New York and from 1979 with Bazon Brock at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna , lives in Romrod in the Vogelsberg district and Frankfurt am Main.

Stumpf has been a professor for life drawing and conceptual drawing in the visual communication department since 1995 and leads interdisciplinary projects at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main .

“In the search for a binding, symbolic imagery, Stumpf came across early Christianity and Byzantine art . He uses this traditional symbolism for his works and fills them with contemporary topics. ”This resulted in his icon " Entry into Jerusalem "(1986), which he sent in a container to a worldwide traveling exhibition as part of the“ Contempler ”project , and which he varies to this day.

Stumpf initially worked with the rapidograph on his clear, filigree flawless DIN A-4 drawings. Later he also developed his image inventions on the computer - for example the screensaver Angeline (1994/96) - and thus moves in " spiritual / virtual world realities". In 1987 Stumpf removed the element of the palm branch from his icon and transferred it to ten 10-meter-high wooden objects, which he painted red and installed as hieratic symbols in his hometown Alsfeld in a field on the A5 motorway .

The donkey from “Entry into Jerusalem ” also leads a life of its own as an independent motif, for example on the large wall mosaic in the Habsburgerallee underground station in Frankfurt am Main, where it carries a clock, a screen or an atomic nucleus on its back. The work, created in 1992, shows 66 donkeys on a wall surface of around 200 meters.

In 1997 Stumpf performed an " Imitatio Christi " as a scenic representation in the Frankfurt gallery ak . The drawings resulting from this action are presented on the walls of the gallery. On the occasion of the German Evangelical Church Congress in Frankfurt am Main (2001), Stumpf designed a 12-meter-high figure of Christ under the title “Super-Rio” , which with its outspread arms and the title refers directly to the Christ of Corcovado Hill in Rio de Janeiro , and which he installs on seven different “secular cathedrals” - including the Commerzbank building and other major banks. With this project, Stumpf wants to "place people above the power of money" - the summit crosses should act like a "spiritual headline high above the city" and leave room for free associations about belief and religion .

In 2005 Stumpf realized a church window for the Waldhufenkirche in Winterkasten . It deals with the "Resurrection of Jesus on Easter morning". The colors of the window “symbolize the transition from darkness to light in human life”.

In 2008 Stumpf shows an extensive retrospective at the Montez family art association in Frankfurt am Main . On over 1000 m² he presents old and new works: drawings, paintings and sculptures.

In 2009 Stumpf - since 1995 professor at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main - works with six students on the interior design of the 57 m² Christian chapel in the new building of the Offenbach am Main Clinic .

For the year 2021, Manfred Stumpf plans to put Jesus' parable “A camel is more likely to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of God” on Paul-Arnsberg-Platz in front of the European Central Bank . A steel needle is said to protrude 23 meters into the air opposite the ECB, with a bronze camel sitting in front of its eye. When viewed from above, the needle should look like an upturned palm and symbolize the tree of life or the kingdom of God , eternity . The sculpture “Camel and the Eye of a Needle” should be accessible and thus tangible.

The treatment of the line has a long tradition and can be traced from the Egyptian hieroglyph , the clear outlines of medieval panel painting , the drawings of the Romantics , to Pop Art to this day.

Entry into Jerusalem

In 1987 Manfred Grether wrote in the Skyscraper Art Journal : Manfred Stumpf loaded “a single motif, the 'Entry into Jerusalem'. A naked knight monk staring frontally out of the picture, who holds an upward-reaching palm branch with both hands, sits in the lady's seat on a flat, down-to-earth donkey that trots behind a gate-like picture-in-picture rectangle. A feathered head of palms, radiating upwards, arched like a dome, held and grounded by the brain-supporting (often spinal column-like), elastically curved palm tree shaft, the strange couple. (It depends on image movements, surface-figure relationships, form-line correspondences and subtle approximations.) From the development of the image it can be seen that the rider descends from space, that he incarnates in A4 , that he is his little scene creates, which becomes increasingly abstract and repellent and possibly evaporates. "

Stumpf himself explains in 2015: “The icon ' Entry into Jerusalem ' is a ritual that extends far into the prehistory of Christianity, a myth that extends in both directions, into the future and into the past, as interreligious image proves sustainable. Isaiah transfigured the prehistoric equestrian image into the Jewish-messianic conception and then incorporated it into Christian iconography, as a redemption motif for man's becoming God . Before he creates thousands of pictures, he prefers to concentrate on one thing, because you can understand everything in a single motif, how you can marry, love and live with one person.

Quote

"If the drawing is wrong, you can forget about everything else."

- Manfred Stumpf

“For Manfred Stumpf, drawing is the ideal form of expression. He compares it with the Japanese haiku (...) Applied to the drawings, this means that the narrative should be reduced as much as possible. "
