The 1822 art award is an art award for visual artists associated with the Frankfurt am Main region. The sponsor is the 1822 Foundation of the Frankfurter Sparkasse .

The art award honors visual artists who are connected to the region through birth, place of residence, training, exhibition or teaching activities. At the same time, her work should be characterized by future prospects. The award honors the life's work. This means that he is exempt from artists' income tax.
history
The art prize has been awarded under changing names since 1972. In the early years it was called the Kunstpreis Forum Stadtsparkasse and was endowed with 5000 DM, which was divided into a main prize and two sponsorship prizes . It is considered to be the first art award that a German credit institute issued to contemporary artists. The carrier was the municipal Frankfurter Stadtsparkasse . From 1989, after the merger with Frankfurter Sparkasse in 1822 , the prize was awarded in a new form, called the Reinhold Kurth Art Prize of the Frankfurter Sparkasse, and was associated with a cash prize of DM 25,000. The Frankfurter Sparkasse was the sponsor from 1822 .
The 1822 Art Prize
Since 1999, the prize has been awarded by the 1822 Foundation of Frankfurter Sparkasse with a prize sum of 15,000 euros (as of 2014). A personal application is not possible. The selection is made by a jury consisting of resident rectors of the art academies, cultural journalists, museum directors and a member of the foundation board. In 2009, the committee included Michael Hierholzer (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), Max Hollein (Director of the Städelsche Kunstinstitut), Bernd Kracke (Hochschule für Gestaltung, Offenbach), Carolina Romahn (Cultural Office of the City of Frankfurt) and Herbert Hans Grüntker (1822 Foundation). The 2010 jury consisted of Daniel Birnbaum (Städelschule), Susanne Gaensheimer (Museum of Modern Art), Holger Kube Ventura (Frankfurter Kunstverein), previous year's award winner Heiner Blum and the foundation representative. It is the most highly endowed, annual award in the field of fine arts in Frankfurt. It has been presented in the Kaisersaal of the Frankfurter Römers since 2006 .
The prize has been awarded every two years since 2014 and is endowed with EUR 15,000.
