The Cathedral Museum in the historic cloister of the Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew in Frankfurt am Main has existed since 1987 . The regular exhibition includes some highlights of sacred art . In addition, the museum presents contemporary art or cultural-historical topics in changing exhibitions . A second exhibition space has been the so-called sacristy in the neighboring house at the cathedral since 2007 (“Dependance sacristy in the house at the cathedral”).

Regular exhibition

A walk through the museum provides insights into the checkered history of Frankfurt Cathedral, which is of particular importance for German history up to the 19th century. The elections for kings since 1356 and the coronations of emperors since 1562 play an important role here. The exhibition includes exhibits that are among the outstanding moments of sacred art.

The permanent exhibition includes exhibits on the following topics:

  • History of the Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew in Frankfurt am Main * Grave finds that were discovered during the interior renovation of the cathedral that was carried out between 1992 and 1994. Among them is in particular the grave of two children from around 700. They apparently belonged to wealthy Merovingian families and were buried around 680 in the oldest predecessor church of the cathedral.
  • Two reliquaries from the 18th and 20th centuries. The skullcap of the apostle Bartholomäus is the only apostle relic in Germany in Frankfurt Cathedral . It has been known since the fifth century and probably came to Frankfurt around 1200. Their veneration in Frankfurt is first attested in a document from 1215. The cathedral has been dedicated to Saint Bartholomew since 1239.
  • A selection of liturgical implements and vestments from the 14th to 20th centuries.

Temporary exhibitions

The temporary exhibitions are dedicated to individual artists or historically significant topics, e.g. As the Dombrand of 1867. From 30 September 2006 to 14 January 2007, the exhibition was The Emperor Makers mark the 650 anniversary of the Golden Bull instead, the Frankfurt to election and later crown city of Holy Roman Emperor certain . The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Institute for City History , the Historical Museum and the Jewish Museum . In this exhibition in the Cathedral Museum, the liturgical processes and the theological symbolism of the election and coronation ceremony were shown. There are also exhibitions on modern and contemporary art. These support a productive dialogue between the church exhibition spaces and (independent) artistic positions.
