Since 1990, Franziskus Wendels has been developing his painting dealing with the subject of the city. The initially very expressive, strongly colored pictures show motifs from public places, train stations and airports, which are often reproduced from an elevated point of view. It is characteristic of his painting that almost all of the pictures depict nocturnal scenes. At the end of the 1990s, Franziskus Wendels' painting shifted away from the impasto, expressive style to a restrained application of paint and a monochrome color palette. At the same time, the motifs become more abstract and sometimes only show sections of illuminated landscapes or house facades. The topic of “light” comes to the fore. In his pictures Franziskus Wendels examines a border area between figuration and abstraction, between surface and space. His works are characterized by a blurring and ambiguity. In addition to painting, Franziskus Wendels works with videos and light installations.
