Aris Kalaizis (* 1966 in Leipzig ) is a figurative painter , German-Greek origin. He is assigned to the New Leipzig School . Art award winner of the German Volks- and Raiffeisenbanken.

Life

Aris Kalaizis grew up as the son of Greek emigrants in Leipzig. His parents came to Leipzig as children in 1949 as a result of the Greek civil war (1946–1949).

After an apprenticeship as an offset printer and retraining as a photo laboratory assistant , he began studying painting at the Academy of Graphics and Book Art with Arno Rink and his assistant Neo Rauch in 1992 , which he graduated with honors in 1997. From 1997 to 2000 he completed his master class with Arno Rink.

A first comprehensive and public solo exhibition took place in 2005 at the Marburger Kunstverein . In 2007 he presented his first USA solo show in New York as part of a work grant . He became known to an international audience in 2010 through his participation in the Biennale di Venezia (12th Mostra Internazionale di Architettura) and in 2011 through his participation in the 4th Triennial in the Guangdong Museum in Guangzhou (China). The international triennial, which took place in the Guangdong Museum of Art, granted Kalaizis a larger individual room in which eight large-format pictures were presented.

A somewhat unusual exhibition, however, took place in 2011 under the title “The Double View” in the Greiz Castle Museum, where Kalaizis put historical rooms he found in a contemporary context for the first time. In 2014 a comprehensive museum tour through Germany, Austria and the Netherlands took place.

In the years 2014/15 he painted the painting The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew or The Double Martyrdom, his largest picture to date. It was located in the Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew in Frankfurt am Main.

In 2018, the Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig, based in his native city, acquired a painting by Kalaizis for the first time with the large-format painting "Die Schwebende" (2018).

In addition to his professor, Arno Rink, who supervised him throughout his studies, Aris Kalaizis was particularly influenced by Jusepe de Ribera and Francis Bacon in his younger years . However, his painting has changed since then and has an unmistakable style. He always works on individual images, which often touch the spheres of magic and the grotesque. In the center of his pictures, however, is always the person in a strongly existentialist sense. References to religious themes, which suggest an endeavor to regain mysticism , are also unmistakable. In 2018, at the request of Museum Angerlehner , Aris Kalaizis published an art-theoretical text that clarifies his views on art.

Since 2000 he has been living as a freelance painter in Leipzig. His pictures can be found in several domestic and foreign art collections.

Today, Kalaizis constructs his paintings , mostly evoked from dreams , with the help of elaborate stagings or structures that he creates at the location and at the end of which several photographs are initially taken . The scenes in his pictures, which sometimes seem surreal, are developed from ideas that Kalaizis records in the manner of a script. At the end of this creation process, pictorial dream images of inner possible worlds emerge.

Make Believe / oil on wood / 59 × 80 cm / 2009

At the beginning of the work, however, there is always the dream that evokes the inner image or ideal. Once the interior image is in place, he builds a realistic model in his studio or looks for an external condition in reality, usually a background that comes closest to his 'desired background'. Once that external condition is found, he takes a photo of this place. This self-made photo mostly serves as the basis for the background layer. What follows is a meditative, contemplative process in which he thinks about what could happen in front of / with this scene. This working approach fundamentally differentiates Kalaizis from the photorealists , as they do not challenge a new reality.

His defining structural principle is antithetics , whereby the painterly positioning achieved - with the aim of a nuanced renewed project - is to be called into question. In a time-consuming process, in which usually no more than five pictures are painted per year, parallel drafts of the existing ones are created. However, since these paintings cannot be assigned to either the surreal or the real, the American art historian, Carol Strickland , developed the term Sottorealism in relation to Kalaizis' world of images .

“Bursting with ambiguity, his pictures promise to reveal what they are hiding. But even on closer examination, their multiple layers of meaning are inexhaustible. Perhaps a new term for the description of his work is more telling than the terms realism or surrealism . Instead of sur , which means above or above , Sottorealism is more appropriate here. Sotto ( below or below ) indicates the secrets hidden in a color that are buried under the surface of history. "

What mostly emerges are images that cause a certain tumult, a certain disturbance of the inner balance. Life and death, dream and reality flow strangely into one another. The movable seems frozen and the rigid seems uncannily moved. Often the images are charged with a strange vehemence in which everything is always at the same time: magic, grace, sweetness and depth. Kalaizis, whose pictures revolve around the subject areas of reality and imagination, often mentions the surrealist André Masson in discussions , who once said: “There is nothing more fantastic than reality”.

Work process

Characteristic of the work process of the painter Aris Kalaizis are the elaborate structures that arise in advance of his picture projects. They serve to get closer to the target image, which is then implemented painterly on the canvas. Paul-Henri Campbell wrote: "Aris Kalaizis (walks through) several work stages in finding the image: 1) Inner emptiness, which makes one receptive to an image; 2) the patience to rediscover this numinous sensation in real places, objects and figures; 3) the Construction of this in-picture in the profane reality of the studio or in the great outdoors; 4) the photographic documentation of these elaborate structures, which often involve whole cohorts of craftsmen, extras and professional actors; 5) design of the canvas form of the picture on the basis of these photo documents. " After completing this preliminary work, Kalaizis realizes the picture, mostly painted in oil, in his studio in Leipzig. This process, which is unusual for a painter, is also a unique selling point in contemporary painting.

Superstructures for the picture "Return of a Farewell" (2010) in Aris Kalaizis' Leipzig studio

The above series documents the structure of the oil painting "Return of a Farewell", which forms the end of the series. In order to be able to implement the models, additional workers are often required, for example to lay floors, set up temporary walls and wallpaper, but also actors, lighting technicians or costume designers. Props are diverse, for example the root plate of a tree, aircraft turbines, living animals and much more
