Life
Paul-Henri Campbell is the son of an American Army officer and a German nurse. He grew up in Massachusetts and later moved to Germany with his parents, where he graduated from high school in Bavaria. Campbell received the Bavarian Art Prize for his volume of poetry "nach den anarkosen" (2017) , and the literary critic Gregor Dotzauer also selected the volume for the Literaturhaus Berlin to be featured among the ten volumes of poetry in 2017 . In 2018 Uljana Wolf proposed the volume " after the anesthesia " for the poetry recommendations of the German Academy for Language and Poetry . The volume contains u. a. Poems that develop a poetology of the sick or of "insufficiency": a poetological position for which Campbell coined the hermeneutic term " salute normativity " based on Judith Butler . Herbert Wiesner once said in Die Welt with a wink: "Paul-Henri Campbell admits that even martyrs are a little vain now and then, aren't they."
In addition to essays, he mainly writes poetry. His poems deal with myths of everyday life in scenic images. Here he stands both in the tradition of the thing poem and in that of symbolism with objects such as B. Firebird Trans Am, the New York subway line A-Train, the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk , the Concorde or various Vasa sacra . The volume of poetry Space Race stages the race to the moon as a paradigmatic myth for the 20th century.
Campbell also published numerous essayistic portraits of painters and graphic artists such as B. Marianna Gartner , Hartwig Ebersbach , Arno Rink , Sighard Gille or Michael Morgner . Campbell worked intensively on the work of the Leipzig painter Aris Kalaizis in the form of exhibitions, lectures, and writings.
Since January 2013 Campbell has been a permanent member of the editorial team of the poetry magazine DAS GEDICHT , where he, together with Michael Augustin and Anton G. Leitner, wrote an English-language edition, DAS GEDICHT chapbook. German Poetry Now . Its aim is to make German-language poetry of the present available in translation to an international audience.
He has published numerous articles in German and international literary magazines (e.g. Lichtungen , World Literature Today , Hessischer Literaturbote, drafts , Volltext , Akzente , Ostra-Gehege , Cordite Poetry Review, DAS GEDICHT ).

Or whether it is an obsession, a wrong switching of feelings, a deception even. Great love? - No. Not really. From a thematic point of view, some of what Campbell says here could also be found in Raymond Carver. Even if it didn't have these consequences with Carver. Because Campbell's stories have consequences. They are not all relationships , all of which are very unstable, full of abysses, uncertainties, false floors - they all have a strong tendency to complete the disaster. "
