Gille studied from 1965 to 1970 at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig with Bernhard Heisig and Wolfgang Mattheuer and obtained a diploma in painting. From 1973 to 1976 he was a master student of Bernhard Heisig at the German Academy of the Arts in East Berlin . From 1976 to 1980 he was an assistant at the University for Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig in the painting department. Since 1993 he has taught as a professor at the University for Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig.

Between 1980 and 1981 he made the ceiling painting Gesang vom Leben for the foyer of the Gewandhaus Leipzig , which is the largest ceiling painting in Europe with an area of 712 m². In 1979 the artists Sighard Gille and Wolfgang Peuker were commissioned to do the ceiling painting in the Gewandhaus together. Both had divided the area, as it was not possible to paint together. After the first drafts, the client asked for a uniform handwriting for the entire area. Based on the designs, the order went to Sighard Gille. Wolfgang Peuker got the lower vertical wall, which was not originally intended for painting. After the work began, the client did not agree with Peuker's composition at this central point. The order was canceled and Wolfgang Peuker received a new order for a ceiling painting in the Bach Museum . Peuker's unfinished painting was painted over and paneled.
