The Hermann Hesse Literature Prize was donated in 1956 by the Fördergemeinschaft Kunst eV in Karlsruhe. Since 1977 the award has been linked to the sponsorship award of the city of Karlsruhe and has been supported by its own foundation since 1994 . The prize in memory of Hermann Hesse is endowed with 15,000 euros (main prize) and 5,000 euros (sponsorship prize) and is awarded by a jury of experts about every two years. The award ceremony will take place in the course of a festive event in Karlsruhe City Hall.

The price is not to be confused with the Calwer Hermann Hesse Prize and with the same name, the first time in 2017 to Adolf Muschg awarded Hermann Hesse Prize of the International Hermann Hesse Society.

Entry into force of the statutes: March 24, 1994

Purpose of the foundation: Promotion of art, especially literature. This purpose is to be achieved by awarding cash prizes at least every three years (since 1997 every two years) in particular to younger writers in order to honor and thereby promote their literary work.
