Das Gedicht (spelling: DAS GEDICHT ) is a poetry magazine in book format that has been published annually since 1993 (subtitle: magazine for poetry, essay and criticism ).

It was founded by the writer and publisher Anton G. Leitner together with Ludwig Steinherr and was published by Leitner alone from 1994 to 2007. The poem has been published by changing co-editors since 2008.

Since the literary discourse in the German-speaking area in magazines, yearbooks and anthologies is dealt with in a representative way, especially in the genre of lyric poetry, Das Gedicht mirrors production-aesthetic trends as a phenomenon in the literary world. In addition, developments in the receptive behavior to poetry among a broader audience can be read from the individual issues.

main emphasis

Contents are first publications by older, well-known, but also especially by younger authors, as well as essays on poetology , the change in form and subject matter in poetry . Since 2000, the respective episodes have been dedicated to a key topic (including eroticism, religion, pop culture, politics, children, animals, health and nature). The book-strong editions also contain reviews and comments as well as (up to and including vol. 14) a bibliography on lyrical new publications by German-language publishers.

The work of the magazine Das Gedicht, which has received much national and international attention, is flanked by broad-based public relations and press work that tries to increase the social acceptance of poetry in society. In this way, the magazine creates a transnational, public discourse on poetry. As a rule, the poem does not receive any subsidies from public funds and thus retains its journalistic independence.

history

The magazine is now one of the literary magazines with the highest circulation in the German-speaking area. The annual z. B. with the list of poets of the century (issue no. 7, 1999/2000), which has been reprinted millions of times worldwide. At the turn of the century, Anton G. Leitner invited 50 leading personalities from literary life to determine the national and international top 100 of poetry .

Interventions such as the TOP 100 poets, which Das Gedicht identified with a 50-strong commission of literary scholars, poets, editors and critics, not only led to international attention for the magazine, but also made Das Gedicht a model for successful cultural mediation. The Bayerische Staatszeitung had to ask itself the question with regard to Das Gedicht: “What is wrong with reading humanity? Can it suddenly no longer be without poetry? ”The critic Joachim Kaiser said on Bayerischer Rundfunk with regard to the magazine:“ Suddenly we begin to suspect how important poetry can be. ”

The first edition in October 1993 already received widespread attention (approx. 130 reports in magazines, newspapers and radio) in the entire German-speaking area. Many commentators praised the conceptual clarity as well as the supra-regional and cross-generational orientation of the new magazine. This orientation made the magazine an "integrative" medium for contemporary poetry. Like no other poetry organ, Das Gedicht was able to ignite the discussion about the art of poetry among a broader readership. The Stuttgarter Zeitung wrote that with this magazine “a search for traces of a new identity” begins.

Erotic special scandal 2000/2001

In the autumn of 2000, parts of the book trade reacted to the erotic edition of Vol. 8 with a sales boycott because they misunderstood the love poetry published in it by leading German poets as pornography. The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote that the erotic special was “offensive and yet unusually authentic.” The artist Gerhard Rühm had contributed to the interior design of the volume with “pictorial verses”.

The edition reached a circulation of 10,000 copies. The news magazine Der Spiegel reported:

“A bookstore in Mainz rejected the magazine on the grounds that 'the cathedral is not far'. In Münster the acceptance of ten copies that had been ordered was refused, another store immediately sent the volumes back. In Dachau, a poet was so outraged by the verses that he wrote to the publisher that he would rather invest his money in an additional 'Tragl' wheat beer in the future than buy a volume of poetry. One bookseller simply stated that she could not interpret the 'erotic special' in her shop. The Swiss poet and Reformed pastor Kurt Marti, himself represented in the volume with an erotic poem, said he was amused by the 'extremely complex volume of poems'. "

The reactions of indignant traders and self-appointed moral guards ranged from savage insults to death threats against the publisher. The editors had, however, prevented such reactions somewhat and included removable black bars as a censorship bar collection in the edition , which made it possible to cover up offensive verses while reading.

However, when several national media (including ZDF, PRO 7, RTL, Bild, Spiegel-Online, Süddeutsche Zeitung and the teletext of Bayerischer Rundfunk) supported Leitner's erotic selection, the episode became a cult number. The Munich news magazine Focus placed number 41 in its ranking “The 100 best books” (cf. Focus No. 42/2000), and every day the Westdeutsche Rundfunk broadcast an erotic poem from the erotic special by Das Gedicht and Lilo Wanders recited from it in her show Wa (h) re Liebe .

Poetry in public

From the first edition on, the circle around Das Gedicht endeavored to see poetry in a social context. The editors of the first edition in 1993 included a special supplement on the subject of poems and the Stasi .

In collaboration with the literary scholar Ulrich Johannes Beil , Das Gedicht initiated a debate on the question “Is there a European poem?” . In addition to translations from z. B. the English, Spanish, Greek, the magazine regularly illuminates German-language poetry outside of Germany. At the same time the magazine invigorates a productive culture of debate among poets; then involved Durs Grünbein , Höllerer and Jürgen Becker in the discussion long or short poem. The critic Joachim Kaiser from Bayerischer Rundfunk put the focus of a broadcast on this discussion (Bayern2Radio).

In October 1999, Anton G. Leitner, on behalf of the editors of Das Gedicht , demanded in a public statement that the doctorate of Germanist Elisabeth Frenzel , who wrote the standard work, Daten deutscher Dichtung , be withdrawn because her doctoral thesis contained “anti-Semitic tendencies”.

A heated discussion broke out in which the President of the Humboldt University in Berlin also took part. "We would be placing ourselves in the inglorious tradition of National Socialism, when academic titles were revoked for racial or political reasons," he explained. The Süddeutsche Zeitung made this argument “at a loss”. “That mustn't be an argument here,” says the newspaper (SZ October 14, 1999). As a result of this controversy, Anton G. Leitner received anonymous threatening letters with anti-Semitic content.

The editorial team under Anton G. Leitner developed a similar commitment with regard to the SS membership of Günter Grass in 2006. Leitner had asked the Nobel Prize winner to donate the proceeds of the book for his autobiographical work Skinning the Onion to the victims of the Waffen SS. Leitner told the Süddeutsche Zeitung : Grass could "show in a very simple way that he did not want to benefit materially from the disclosure of SS membership."

In addition to such debates, Das Gedicht is repeatedly involved through a variety of actions in the mediation and perception of poetry in the public and thus actively shapes literary culture in German-speaking countries. For example, millions of bread bags and sugar packets were printed with verse: "Crystal against bitterness."

International Poetry Summit

On October 23, 2012 the magazine celebrated its anniversary issue Volume 20 with a reading evening under the title International Poetry Summit in the Literaturhaus Munich . During this event, 60 well-known poets from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg, a. a. Friedrich Ani , Ulrike Draesner , Franz Xaver Kroetz , Paul Maar , Matthias Politycki , Said , Joachim Sartorius and Robert Schindel . The event was recorded by Bayerischer Rundfunk , the first broadcast on television took place on January 12, 2013 on BR-alpha in the series Denkzeit (156 broadcast minutes).

A quarter of a century The poem

The appearance of the 25th edition of Das Gedicht in October 2017 was accompanied by several events. Under the title “The future of poetry”, an international poetry colloquium took place in Benediktbeuern monastery on October 24th in cooperation with the Upper Bavaria district . The speakers included Paul-Henri Campbell , Christophe Fricker , Uwe Michael Gutzschhahn , Klára Hůrková , Erich Jooß and Anatoli Kudrjawitzki . On October 25, the demonstration “Poets for Human Rights” took place on Munich's Marienplatz, organized by Das Gedicht and Amnesty International, in which Melanie Arzenheimer , Michael Augustin , Sujata Bhatt , Semier Insayif , Said and Ludwig Steinherr took part. On the same day, the anniversary edition of Das Gedicht was presented at a reading in the Literaturhaus in Munich with over 60 participants. The laudation was given by Friedrich Ani and Christoph Leisten .

International edition

German Poetry Now

Together with Paul-Henri Campbell as co-editor and translator, the editors of Das Gedicht launched an international edition in English for the first time in January 2014: Das Gedicht chapbook. German Poetry Now. The first number (Vol. 1: Pegasus & Rosinante. When Poets Travel. ) Is based on volume 21 of the main edition and contains about half of their texts, including a. Poems by Günter Kunert , Helmut Krausser , Tanja Dückers , Matthias Politycki and Jan Wagner . It was published in print and as an e-book.

The second international edition followed in 2016 (Vol. 2: Lustful Things ) with a new concept: The volume contains all of the poems published in the online anthology of the same name on DAS GEDICHT blog in both English and German.

Introduction of online editing

In addition to the magazine's website, which was set up in 1995, the publisher has been running its own channel on YouTube for poetry clips (“dasgedichtclip”) with live recordings of readings since October 2009. In 2012 an accompanying weblog (“dasgedichtblog”) with information on the anniversary edition and events in the anniversary year was started for the anniversary edition, Volume 20 . A register of all contributions from issues 1 to 25 was also published on “dasgedichtblog”. The blog accompanies and supplements the print edition of the magazine in a variety of ways. Episode 21 ( Pegasus & Rosinante. When Poets Travel. ) Z. B. was prepared with multimedia contributions on the history of travel poetry, curated by Paul-Henri Campbell . Independent collections of poems, so-called online anthologies, are also published here. Examples of this are "Wenn Liebe schwant", a collection of comic love poems that were published for the first time, and "Drawn from leather - to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil", both published in 2014 by Jan-Eike Hornauer .

In his function as the person responsible for the video channel “dasgedichtclip”, the poem editor Anton G. Leitner initiated the “1st prize” together with the medienakademie Munich and other institutions such as the Lyrik Kabinett Foundation .
