History of the building

The Salvator Church is on Salvatorplatz . The cemetery surrounding the church was rededicated as a market square in the 18th century. With the decision of the Munich magistrate to have a school built there by Friedrich Löwel in the neo-renaissance style from 1886 to 1887, the market lost its place and was integrated into the ground floor of the new building. The market was closed in 1906 and the building was completely converted into a school.

In 1993 the Munich city council decided to use the building, which was in dire need of renovation, as a literary house. To this end, the state capital of Munich founded the Book, Media and Literature House Foundation in Munich together with publishers from Munich . In 1995 the renovation and renovation of the house and the entire Salvatorplatz began. In addition to various event rooms, a literary cafe was also housed in the building. In June 1997 the Literaturhaus Munich was able to open. Since 2002 the fictional office of the “Mother Superior” of the ARD television series Um Himmels Willen has been on the third floor .
