The Salvatorplatz is a place in the Munich Old Town . It is named after the Salvator Church there .

The church was built in 1480 as a cemetery church. The cemetery surrounding the church was rededicated as a market square in the 18th century. Due to the decision of the Munich magistrate to build a school there, the market lost its place and was integrated into the ground floor of the new building. The market was closed in 1906 and the building was completely converted into a school.

From 1657 to 1795 (when the building became too small) the opera house on Salvatorplatz stood on Munich's Salvatorplatz . It was also the first free-standing opera house in Germany.

Today the square, which has been renovated in the meantime, is characterized by the Greek Orthodox Salvatorkirche, which opened in 1997, the Literaturhaus Munich (the former school), the Palais Minucci (former "parent house" of the Hugendubel bookstore from 1893 to 2012) and the one planned by Franz Hart in 1965 Salvatorgarage , a parking garage. It is also known as the address of the Bavarian Ministry of Culture .

In 2018, the city of Munich decided to erect a memorial for the family of the writer Thomas Mann on Salvatorplatz and organized a competition for art in public spaces . In 2019 the city council decided to implement the "Street Name Sign" design by the artist Albert Coers .
