Sujata Bhatt

Sujata Bhatt (born May 6, 1956 in Ahmedabad ) is a poet and translator with Indian roots.

Life

Bhatt grew up in Pune , where she attended an English language school. She was often in the United States with her family as a child, and they eventually moved there in 1968. She later studied at the University of Iowa , where she attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop . It was there that she met her future husband, the German author Michael Augustin . She was writer in residence at the University of Victoria and Dickinson College , among others .

Bhatt has a daughter and lives with her family in Bremen .

Work and awards

Bhatt writes and publishes her works in English . In her poetry she often deals with the search for home and her experiences in India, North America and Europe. In the volume of poetry A Color for Solitude , Bhatt deals with the life of the painter Paula Modersohn-Becker and others in the Worpswede artists' colony . Her work has received numerous awards, such as the 1991 Cholmondeley Award . Bhatt's poems have been published in numerous compilations and translated into over 20 languages.

Bhatt translated poems into English in her native Gujarati , as well as works in German , for example by Günter Grass .
