Matthias Koeppel (born August 22, 1937 in Hamburg ) is a German painter and poet .

Life

The co-founder of the Schule der neue Splächtigkeit (1973) became known to a larger audience primarily through his poems in Starckdeutsch (first published in 1976) (self-termed "language artist"). Since 1975 Koeppel has also been writing the lyrics for the men's vocal ensemble Berliner Hymnentafel .

From 1981 to 2003 Koeppel was professor of free painting and drawing at the Faculty of Architecture at the TU Berlin . During this time he supported the Ullstein Verlag in recruiting artists for the Buddy Bear Berlin Show . He himself took part with two bears he designed, which were later auctioned to support “children in need”.

As a full member of the German Association of Artists , he took part in several major annual exhibitions of the DKB between 1972 and 1985. In 1990 he was one of the founding members of the Künstleronderbund in Germany (KSB) . He is also an honorary member of the Berlin Artists Association .

Koeppel has been painting the Berlin Wall continuously since the 1970s and can be described as the history painter of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In numerous works between 1990 and 2008, he reviewed the night of November 9-10, 1989. In 1997 Koeppel completed the triptych The Opening of the Berlin Wall for the Prussian State Parliament, Berlin .

In addition to his concentration on Berlin, Koeppel is known for his large skies over Berlin, under which German contemporary history takes place, and his realism . Since the mid-2010s he has been developing a new style, neocubism.

As a language artist, Koeppel also published shaking rhymes and sonnets .

Private

Koeppel has been married to the Korean-German painter Youn-Sook Hong, known as Sooki , since 1995 . They have a daughter, Mi-Youn Mathilde. He is a cousin of the composer Peter Ronnefeld .
