Sooki

Sooki (born in Seoul , Korea in 1954 as Hong, Youn-Sook) is a Korean painter. She has lived in Berlin since 1984. She is characterized by a hyper-realistic style of painting.

Life

Her father wanted her to be a doctor. As a student of dentistry, she went to Germany, where she realized her wish to work as a painter. She herself said that she cannot see blood. In 1995 she married the painter Matthias Koeppel . The couple has a daughter who works as a musician, a composer for contemporary music.

Exhibitions are held regularly in her studio. She often works with her husband such as B. for the Werkbund Berlin.

Sooki exhibited in several districts of Berlin. Their 1999 exhibition in the Köpenick district had to be closed for security reasons. Some of the 32 oil paintings depicting Berlin cityscapes were stolen.

She launched the German-Korean biennial change-exchange , a cultural project with artists from Seoul and Berlin. It started with the first exhibition in 2011, in which 50 German and Korean artists were involved. Further exhibitions with German and Korean artists followed in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017.

In 2009 Sooki published the volume of poems Heimat in der Ferne , which puts her observations of life into words and pictures. To this end, she organized an exchange exhibition with the Korean Association of Women Artists from Seoul and some artists from Berlin.

In 2018 she organized the exhibition Painted Poems - Written Pictures together with the Korean Writers' Association as part of its anniversary at the City Hall Gallery in Seoul.

In Korea Sooki received the international art award in 2008 as well as several poetry awards. She is a member of the Association of Berlin Artists .
