School of new splendor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The School of New Magnificence is a loose association of painters with a similar style. The group joined forces on January 24, 1973 in the “Atelier Grützke” in Berlin with the appeal “Save yourselves from woe: Become a student of the New Magnificence!”. It was about the painters Johannes Grützke , Manfred Bluth , Matthias Koeppel and Karlheinz Ziegler , who had devoted themselves to the style of a satirical realism spiced with irony . “It was the anger against the overpowering abstract painting that pushed us out of the exhibitions,” says Matthias Koeppel. Even the aesthetic program of figuratively painting - albeit with an ironic break - did not fit into that time at all. The scene and inspiration venue for the artists was the “Natubs” gallery bar on Bregenzer Strasse in Berlin-Wilmersdorf.
